Hideo Kojima’s critically acclaimed video game franchise, Death Stranding, is officially expanding into an animated series titled Death Stranding Isolations (working title), set to premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2027. The announcement was made by the legendary game creator himself at Disney’s Asia Pacific originals content showcase in Hong Kong. This new venture will delve into an original narrative within the haunting post-apocalyptic world of Death Stranding, exploring themes of human resilience and connection.
Hideo Kojima Takes the Stage for the Big Reveal
The highly anticipated animated series was unveiled by Hideo Kojima during the Disney+ Originals Preview 2025 event, held at the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel Convention Center. Kojima will serve as an executive producer for Death Stranding Isolations, ensuring his vision for the unique universe is maintained in this new format. The announcement marks a significant step for the franchise, which has captivated over twenty million players worldwide since its initial release in 2019.
A New Story within the Familiar World of Death Stranding
Death Stranding Isolations is slated to tell a completely new story, distinct from the narratives of the video games. The series will follow a young man and woman on an adventure, focusing on the experiences of “nameless individuals” surviving in various isolated locations. This approach promises to offer a fresh perspective on the game’s world, examining the struggles of solitude and the desperate search for connection in a world facing existential collapse.
Key Creative Team Behind the Animation
The animation for Death Stranding Isolations will be handled by E&H Production, a studio known for its work on titles such as BULLET/BULLET and NINJAKAMUI. Directing the series is Takayuki Sano, an industry veteran recognized for his contributions to major anime like Dragon Ball, Attack on Titan, Hunter x Hunter, and Jujutsu Kaisen. Renowned artist Ilya Kuvshinov, celebrated for his character design work on Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2045, will contribute as the character design concept artist. The series is expected to utilize traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation, which is noted as a departure from some of Disney’s recent animated projects.
Differentiating from the “Death Stranding Mosquito” Animated Film
It is important to note that Death Stranding Isolations is a distinct project from another animated adaptation previously announced. In September 2025, Kojima Productions confirmed an animated film project with the working title Death Stranding Mosquito. This film is being produced by ABC Animation Studio, with Hiroshi Miyamoto directing and Aaron Guzikowski writing the screenplay. While both projects expand the Death Stranding universe through animation, Isolations is specifically an anime series slated for Disney+ in 2027, while Mosquito is an animated film with its own creative team and a teaser trailer already released.
The anticipation for Death Stranding Isolations is high, as fans eagerly await to see how the unique narrative and atmospheric world of the game will be translated into a serialized animated format by such an accomplished creative team.
