The massively popular “Chiikawa” manga, known for its endearing “something small and cute” (Nanka Chiisakute Kawaii Yatsu) characters, is set to receive its first anime film adaptation, titled Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu (Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island). The film is slated to premiere next summer, promising to bring the charming yet sometimes poignant world of Chiikawa to the big screen.

The announcement was made on Monday with the launch of an official website, which also unveiled a teaser visual and key staff for the upcoming movie. Creator Nagano, who launched the web manga on X (formerly Twitter) in January 2020, is credited for the original story and is also penning the film’s script.

Diving into the “Mermaid Island” Arc

The Chiikawa film will adapt a beloved storyline from the manga, often referred to by fans as the “Siren Arc” or “Island Arc,” which was originally posted on X between March and November 2023. The narrative begins with Chiikawa and Hachiware enjoying a moment of relaxation until a rabbit appears with a mysterious flyer. The flyer, an “Invitation to a special island,” promises tempting rewards for simple hunts and an abundance of sweet and spicy dishes, including limited-edition island ramen. Lured by these promises, Chiikawa and friends decide to embark on the island adventure, with the suspicious Rakko joining them. The film will explore the mysteries and challenges that await them upon their arrival.

Key Creative Team Behind the Film

Kei Oikawa, known for his work on Uma Musume Pretty Derby and Hinamatsuri, will direct the Chiikawa film at Cygames Pictures. QTORY inc. is managing the production, and TOHO will handle the distribution. This collaboration brings together experienced talent to translate the unique charm and humor of Chiikawa into a feature-length animation.

The Enduring Popularity of Chiikawa

Since its debut as a webcomic, Chiikawa has rapidly become a cultural phenomenon in Japan and has seen a surge in popularity in other regions, including China, Hong Kong, and Western countries. The series, which has over 2.7 million copies in circulation, resonates with audiences of all ages due to its adorable character designs, relatable stories, and themes of friendship, hard work, and everyday challenges. The characters, including the timid Chiikawa, the cheerful Hachiware, and the energetic Usagi, navigate a world that blends cute visuals with sometimes complex themes.

The manga’s success led to an anime television series adaptation produced by Doga Kobo, which premiered in April 2022. The anime airs as part of Fuji TV’s Mezamashi TV morning news and entertainment program. Sentai Filmworks licenses the series outside of Asia, making it available on HIDIVE with English subtitles. The anime has garnered a significant fanbase, with new episodes regularly anticipated.

What to Expect from the First Movie

Fans can anticipate a faithful adaptation of the “Siren Arc,” expanding on the web manga’s beloved narrative with enhanced animation and a cinematic scope. The film is expected to capture the blend of heartwarming moments, lighthearted humor, and underlying sense of mild peril that defines the Chiikawa universe. With Nagano directly involved in the scriptwriting, the movie promises to maintain the authentic voice and spirit that has captivated millions. The summer 2026 release date positions it as a highly anticipated event for both long-time fans and newcomers to the enchanting world of Chiikawa.
