The highly anticipated sequel to Yohei Kameyama’s “Milky☆Highway,” Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express, has released its second trailer, revealing additional cast members, the theme song, and its premiere date. Set to debut on July 3, 2025, fans are eagerly awaiting this quirky CG anime short.

What We Know So Far

Here’s a breakdown of the exciting updates:

Premiere Date and Streaming

  • The anime will premiere on July 3rd on the Tokyo MX channel at 9:54 p.m. JST.
  • Simultaneously, it will be available for streaming on YouTube.
  • Dubbed versions in multiple languages, including English, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, French, Hindi, and Russian, will also be available on YouTube.

The Story

“Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express” follows the misadventures of Chiharu, a super human, and Makina, a cyborg. After getting arrested for breaking space traffic laws, they are sentenced to community service. Their task? Cleaning the “Milky☆Subway,” an old interplanetary train. However, their simple task turns chaotic when the train suddenly takes off into deep space. Along with a crew of other misfits – Akane and Kanata (a super human pair), and Kurt and Max (cyborg pals) – Chiharu and Makina must navigate the chaos aboard the runaway train.

The official English website teases a wild ride: “No purpose! No principle! No point! A never-before-seen space-train spectacle, powered by nothing but pure momentum!”

New Cast Members

The second trailer unveils an exciting lineup of new cast members:

  • Hisako Kanemoto as Akane
  • Mikako Komatsu as Ryōko
  • Kōki Uchiyama as Kurt
  • Makoto Koichi as Kanata
  • Yoshitaka Yamaya as Max

They join the previously announced main cast:

  • Momoka Terasawa as Chiharu
  • Anna Nagase as Makina

Theme Song Reveal

Adding to the excitement, the trailer also features the anime’s theme song, “Gingakei Made Tonde Ike!” (Fly to the Galaxy!), originally performed by the girl group Candies in 1977.

Production Details

Yohei Kameyama is the creative force behind Milky☆Subway, serving as director, writer, character designer, and producer. This one-man production approach has garnered attention worldwide. The animation is a collaborative effort between Shin-ei Animation and Titan Industries.

The World of Milky☆Subway

From Milky☆Highway to Milky☆Subway

Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express is a sequel to Kameyama’s 2022 short film, Milky☆Highway. This original short, created as Kameyama’s graduation project for the CG animator course at the Avanzan Game Academy (Kadokawa conglomerate), gained viral popularity on YouTube, amassing over 6.75 million views.

Milky☆Highway introduces Makina and Chiharu as they embark on a drive along the interplanetary road known as Milky☆Highway. The short is described as a “speedy and unprecedented” discount cyberpunk story, filled with chaotic energy and quirky worldbuilding.

What to Expect

Milky☆Subway promises to expand on the world established in Milky☆Highway, delivering a high-speed, chaotic space adventure. With Kameyama’s unique artistic vision and the addition of new characters and a catchy theme song, the sequel is poised to capture the hearts of anime fans worldwide.

Meet the Characters

Chiharu (Voiced by Momoka Terasawa)

Chiharu is described as a “super human.” She is one of the two protagonists, often finding herself in trouble alongside her best friend, Makina. In Milky☆Highway, Chiharu’s reckless driving leads to their arrest, setting the stage for their community service in Milky☆Subway.

Makina (Voiced by Anna Nagase)

Makina is Chiharu’s best friend and a cyborg. Despite being a cyborg, she is portrayed as a lively and relatable character. Makina often acts as the voice of reason to Chiharu’s impulsiveness, though she is equally caught up in their chaotic adventures.

Akane (Voiced by Hisako Kanemoto)

Akane is one half of the super human pair sentenced to clean the Milky☆Subway.

Ryōko (Voiced by Mikako Komatsu)

Ryōko is the police officer who sentences Chiharu and Makina to their community service.

Kurt (Voiced by Kōki Uchiyama)

Kurt is one half of the cyborg duo also serving community service on the Milky☆Subway.

Kanata (Voiced by Makoto Koichi)

Kanata is the other half of the super human duo, working alongside Akane.

Max (Voiced by Yoshitaka Yamaya)

Max is Kurt’s cyborg pal, completing the crew of misfits assigned to clean the Milky☆Subway.

Where to Watch

Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express will be available on Yohei Kameyama’s official YouTube channel.

A Word from the Creator

Yohei Kameyama reflects on the journey from Milky☆Highway to Milky☆Subway: “It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since Milky☆Highway. Back then, I just threw everything I liked into one film—banter, expressions, music, chaotic energy. Thankfully, many people connected with it, and that led to this sequel. This time around, I packed in even more: four times the characters, twelve times the runtime, and a production schedule that stretched over two years… But I believe what came out of it is something bizarre and unprecedented—a completely fresh vibe and visual experience.”

Get Ready for Launch!

With its official premiere just around the corner, Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express is set to deliver a unique and unforgettable anime experience. Be sure to mark your calendars for July 3rd and prepare to embark on a wild ride through the galaxy!
