The Genesis of Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl
Virgin Punk is an original anime film series conceptualized by director Yasuomi Umetsu and brought to life by the renowned animation production studio SHAFT. Umetsu not only directs the series but also serves as the character designer. The screenplay is penned by Yūya Takahashi, with music composed by Yoshiaki Dewa. “Clockwork Girl” marks Umetsu’s return to a project-wide directorial role after a decade, and it is his first series produced by SHAFT.
The film had its Japanese theatrical premiere on June 27, 2025, at Cine Libre Ikebukuro in Tokyo and Theatre Umeda in Osaka, where it quickly secured the #1 spot in mini-theater rankings.
Synopsis and Setting
Virgin Punk is set in the year 2099, a future where humanity has achieved remarkable advancements in overcoming injuries and illnesses through “Somadea,” a Medical Android Technology. However, this technological leap has brought forth a new wave of crime, as Somadea can be illegally modified and misused for criminal purposes, granting users superior physical abilities.
In response to the rise of these “Somadea crimes,” governments have established a Bounty Hunter System. Under this system, registered civilians are authorized to eliminate illegal Somadea users designated as wanted criminals by the police, receiving substantial bounties in return.
The story centers on Ubu Kamigori, a bounty hunter who navigates this challenging world by tracking down criminals. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she returns home from a job and finds Mr. Elegance, a man with whom she shares a complex past, awaiting her. This encounter sets in motion a suspenseful action narrative, described as “a tale woven by mechanical girls and the smell of gunpowder smoke.”
