Manga creator Arata Kawabata is set to launch a new gourmet manga spinoff of the popular live-action Nihon Tōitsu original video series, titled Nomi Kui Dōraku ~Nihon Tōitsu~ (The Vice of Eating and Drinking ~Japan Unification~). The announcement was made in the October issue of Akita Shoten’s Monthly Princess magazine last Friday, with the new series slated to debut in the magazine’s next issue on October 6.
Diving into Nomi Kui Dōraku ~Nihon Tōitsu~
The upcoming manga, Nomi Kui Dōraku ~Nihon Tōitsu~, promises a unique blend of the Nihon Tōitsu universe with a culinary twist. The official X/Twitter account for the Nihon Tōitsu series shared the news, highlighting that the manga will feature “everyone’s relaxed daily life x quite interesting food content.” This suggests a departure from the intense yakuza crime drama of the original series, offering a lighter, food-focused narrative within the established world. Yasukaze Motomiya, a prominent actor who plays one of the main characters in the live-action show, will be supervising the manga, indicating a close connection and authenticity to the source material.
The Enduring Legacy of the Nihon Tōitsu Series
The original Nihon Tōitsu (Japan Unification) live-action video series is a long-running yakuza crime drama. It centers on two protagonists who join Japan’s largest yakuza organization with the ambitious goal of unifying all yakuza organizations across the country. The series has spawned numerous installments, with MyDramaList listing over 90 entries under the “Nihon Toitsu / Unification of Japan” umbrella, including various direct-to-video films and spinoffs. A recent addition to the franchise, Nihon Toitsu: Tokyo Hen, began airing in July 2025.
