The Rebel 3199 Saga So Far
The Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199 project is a seven-film series that also has a planned 26-episode TV adaptation. The story begins in the year 2207, two years after the disappearance of Gamilas and Iskandar. A mysterious giant object known as “Grand Reverse” appears in the solar system, easily breaching Earth’s defenses and descending upon its new capital city. Swarms of multi-legged tanks and soldiers quickly overrun the capital, leaving Earth seemingly defenseless. Amidst this invasion, the crew of the old Yamato fleet receives a top-secret order to rally to the Yamato.
The first film, Kuro no Shinryaku (Dark Invasion), premiered on July 19, 2024, followed by the second film, Sekijitsu no Shutsugeki (The Assault of the Burning Sun), in November 2024. The third film, Gunjō no Asteroid (Ultramarine Asteroid), opened in Japan on April 11, 2025. Crunchyroll is streaming the anime under the title Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 3199.
Key Story Elements and Characters
The Rebel 3199 series is based on the 1980 film Be Forever Yamato and incorporates elements from the 1980-1981 TV series Space Battleship Yamato III. The new enemy, the Dezarium, claim to be humanity’s digitally augmented post-human descendants from the 32nd century. Their presence on Earth leads to significant sociological changes, and the narrative explores the complexities of their integration into human society, as well as an organized rebellion against them.
The fourth film, Mizuiro no Sasha, is expected to further delve into these conflicts. The title itself, “The Aqua Sasha,” has sparked speculation among fans regarding the role of Sasha, a character from the Yamato universe. The new trailer for Mizuiro no Sasha also highlights the return of Desler and features Ram, the captain of the Legendra ship.
