Tokyo, Japan – The anime adaptation Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has maintained its stronghold on the Japanese box office, securing the #1 spot for an impressive seventh consecutive weekend. Meanwhile, the latest installment in the beloved family franchise, Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Sora no Okoku to Futari no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: The Sky Kingdom and Two Children), made its debut at #4.
Chainsaw Man’s Continued Box Office Reign
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, which premiered in Japan on September 19, 2025, has demonstrated remarkable staying power in theaters. As of November 3, 2025, the film has accumulated over 7.9 billion yen (approximately US$51.48 million) from the sale of 5.21 million tickets domestically. This strong performance has also propelled it into Japan’s all-time box office Top 100, landing at the 91st position.
In its seventh weekend (October 31 to November 2), the MAPPA-produced film added another 441 million yen (US$2.87 million) from 294,000 admissions, marking a 10.5% increase from the previous weekend’s earnings. Globally, the “Reze Arc” movie has also achieved significant success, grossing an estimated US$139 million worldwide as of November 2, 2025. Its North American debut alone saw an impressive US$18 million, contributing to its global tally surpassing the $100 million mark.
The film, directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara and written by Hiroshi Seko, adapts the fan-favorite “Bomb Girl” arc from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s original manga series. Its consistent top performance underscores the enduring popularity of the Chainsaw Man franchise among audiences in Japan and abroad.
Sumikko Gurashi’s Skyward Debut
The fourth anime feature film in the Sumikko Gurashi series, Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Sora no Okoku to Futari no Ko, opened in Japanese theaters on October 31, 2025. The family-friendly animation debuted at fourth place, attracting approximately 150,000 viewers and earning 184 million yen (US$1.2 million) during its first three-day weekend. Including a national holiday, its four-day gross reached 253 million yen (US$1.64 million) from 208,000 admissions.
Produced by Fanworks and directed by Naomi Iwata, with a screenplay by Takashi Sumita, the film takes the endearing “Sumikko” characters on a new adventure. The story sees the Sumikkos encounter a prince from the Sky Kingdom and embark on a mission to help his realm overcome a severe water shortage. While its opening weekend performance was 75.7% of the previous third film, The Mysterious Child of the Patchwork Factory (released in November 2023), the Sumikko Gurashi films have consistently proven to be a reliable draw for audiences, with the series’ total attendance exceeding three million across its previous installments.
