Meanwhile, a new live-action adaptation of Makoto Shinkai’s beloved anime film, 5 Centimeters per Second, made a significant debut, opening at #2.

“Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc” Continues Box Office Reign

The animated feature, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, a direct sequel to the popular anime series, continues to draw massive crowds across Japan since its release on September 19, 2025. In its fourth weekend, from October 10-12, the film added 643 million yen (approximately US$4.35 million) from 406,000 admissions.

Impressive Cumulative Gross and National Impact

The film’s cumulative earnings in Japan have now reached a staggering 5.7 billion yen (approximately US$38.56 million) from 3.74 million tickets sold over 25 days. This remarkable performance positions Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc as the fourth-highest-grossing film released in Japan in 2025 to date. The movie is distributed by Toho in Japan, with Crunchyroll handling international releases through Sony Pictures Releasing, including an upcoming October 24 debut in the United States.

International Success in South Korea

Beyond its domestic triumph, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has also seen considerable success internationally. The film topped the South Korean box office from October 10-12, garnering $2.4 million from 324,164 admissions during that period. Its total cumulative earnings in South Korea have reached $13.7 million from 1.8 million admissions.

Live-Action “5 Centimeters per Second” Makes Strong Debut

Opening to considerable anticipation, the live-action film adaptation of Makoto Shinkai’s 2007 anime classic, 5 Centimeters per Second, entered the Japanese box office chart at #2. The film, starring Hokuto Matsumura of the idol group SixTONES, premiered on October 10 in 333 theaters.

Opening Weekend Performance and Audience Reception

In its initial three-day opening weekend, the live-action 5 Centimeters per Second earned 402 million yen (approximately US$2.72 million) from 278,000 admissions. Including a Japanese national holiday, the film’s first four-day gross surpassed 500 million yen (approximately US$3.38 million) from 380,000 admissions. Audience reception has been positive, with the film ranking fourth in Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction survey, achieving an average rating of 4.08 out of 5.0 based on 5,714 reviews.

Legacy of Makoto Shinkai’s Original Work

The original 5 Centimeters per Second anime film, released in 2007, is a critically acclaimed work by director Makoto Shinkai, known for its poignant storytelling and breathtaking visuals. The decision to create a live-action adaptation highlights the enduring impact and popularity of Shinkai’s original narrative.
