TOKYO – “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” has achieved a significant box office milestone in Japan, surpassing 10 billion yen (approximately US$63.9 million) in cumulative domestic gross as of December 30, 2025. The film, a direct sequel to the popular anime series, reached this impressive figure with over 6.55 million admissions after 103 days in theaters, solidifying its position as one of the year’s top-performing films in the country.

The announcement was made by the official “Chainsaw Man” franchise X (formerly Twitter) account, which included a special celebratory illustration and message from original manga author Tatsuki Fujimoto, expressing his gratitude to fans.

A Phenomenal Run for the “Reze Arc”

Released on September 19, 2025, “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” made an explosive debut, selling over 272,000 tickets and earning more than ¥420 million (US$2.8 million) on its opening day. It went on to dominate its opening weekend, securing the #1 spot at the Japanese box office with 807,000 tickets sold and ¥1.251 billion (US$8.46 million) in revenue. This strong performance notably ended “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle”‘s nine-week reign at the top.

The film’s success has been sustained, maintaining a spot within Japan’s top ten box office rankings for 15 consecutive weekends, including seven weeks at number one. Its robust performance has made it the fourth film in Japan to cross the 10 billion yen mark in 2025, joining “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle,” “Kokuho,” and “Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback.”

Global Recognition and Critical Acclaim

Beyond its domestic triumph, “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” has also garnered significant international attention. As of December 2025, the film has grossed over $174.7 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Japanese films of all time. It received positive reviews from critics and performed strongly in international markets, topping the U.S. opening weekend box office with approximately US$18 million from 3,003 North American theaters. The film was distributed internationally by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Releasing.

Production and Story Details

Animated by the renowned Studio MAPPA, “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” adapts the highly anticipated “Bomb Girl Arc” from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s original manga series. Tatsuya Yoshihara directed the film, with Hiroshi Seko returning to write the screenplay and Kazutaka Sugiyama handling character designs.

The movie continues the story of Denji, the titular Chainsaw Man, a young man who, after making a pact with the Chainsaw Devil Pochita, becomes a devil hunter for Special Division 4. The “Reze Arc” introduces a mysterious girl named Reze, with whom Denji forms a romantic connection, leading to a pivotal and action-packed narrative that delves deeper into the complex world of devils and hunters.

Celebrations from Cast and Creator

To commemorate the 10 billion yen achievement, original manga author Tatsuki Fujimoto shared a drawing of Denji and Reze, stating, “Thank you so much for watching so many times! I still can’t get over it yet!” Voice actors for the main characters, including Kikunosuke Toya (Denji), Tomori Kusunoki (Makima), and Shogo Sakata (Aki Hayakawa), also released comments expressing their excitement and gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans.

The enduring success of “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” underscores the widespread popularity of the franchise and its significant impact on the anime and film industries globally.
