Tokyo, Japan – The first film in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle trilogy, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle – Akaza Sairai, has once again secured the top spot at the Japanese box office for an impressive ninth consecutive weekend. The film’s enduring popularity continues to break records, while the newly released You and Idol Precure The Movie: For You! Our Kirakilala Concert! entered the rankings at number four.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Maintains Unprecedented Run

From Friday to Sunday of the latest weekend (September 12-14), Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle – Akaza Sairai sold an estimated 523,000 tickets and grossed 829,888,500 yen (approximately US$5.65 million). This remarkable performance indicates an increase of 103.2% compared to the previous weekend’s earnings.

As of Monday, September 15, its 60th day in Japanese theaters, the film has accumulated a staggering total of 23,042,671 tickets sold, translating to a cumulative box office revenue of 33,056,606,000 yen (about US$224 million). This monumental achievement solidifies its position as the second-highest-earning film of all time at the Japanese box office, surpassing Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s 2001 classic Spirited Away. The franchise’s previous film, Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, still holds the record as the highest-earning film in Japan, with a total of 40.75 billion yen (about US$277 million).

Globally, the film’s success has been equally significant, reaching a cumulative worldwide gross of 68,015,243,965 yen (approximately $464 million USD) from 55,004,375 admissions. This includes a substantial $70 million USD during its opening weekend in the United States, marking the biggest anime opening ever in the region.

Haruo Sotozaki directs the anime at ufotable, which is also credited for the screenplay. The film features theme songs “Taiyō ga Noboranai Sekai” by Aimer and “Zankoku no Yoru ni Kagayake” by LiSA.

You and Idol Precure Makes Its Debut

The 34th Precure anime feature film, You and Idol Precure The Movie: For You! Our Kirakilala Concert! (Eiga Kimi to Idol Precure♪ Omatase! Kimi ni Todokeru KirakkiLive!), premiered on September 12 in 348 theaters across Japan. The film, based on the ongoing You and Idol Precure♪ anime series, opened at number four, selling 283,000 tickets and earning 346 million yen (about US$2.35 million) in its first three days.

The movie’s story is set during the Super Miracle Idol Festival on Aiai Island, where protagonist Uta and other idols from around the world gather. The film also features guest appearances from characters from the previous two main anime entries, Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure and Wonderful Precure!. The three-day opening weekend gross for You and Idol Precure was 94.3% of the franchise’s previous film, Wonderful Precure! The Movie: A Grand Adventure in a Thrilling Game World!. Over its four-day total (Friday to Monday), the film garnered 470,410,720 yen (US$3.21 million) from 380,000 admissions.

The You and Idol Precure television anime, the 22nd main entry in the Precure franchise, premiered on February 2, 2025. Crunchyroll is streaming the series as it airs.
