The upcoming anime adaptation of Masakuni Igarashi’s manga, “Detectives These Days Are Crazy!” (Japanese: Mattaku Saikin no Tantei Tokitara), is generating significant buzz among anime enthusiasts. With the premiere date fast approaching, fans are eager to learn more about the staff, cast, and music that will bring this comedy-mystery series to life. Here’s a breakdown of the latest updates.

Premiere Date

“Detectives These Days Are Crazy!” is scheduled to premiere on July 1, 2025. It will air on AT-X and other networks in Japan.

Production

The anime is being produced by Liden Films, with Rion Kujo as the director. The key staff members include:

  • Director: Rion Kujo (Love Doll, Samurai Harem, Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero)
  • Series Composition: Rintaro Ikeda (The Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon’s Judgement, Insomniacs After School)
  • Character Design & Chief Animation Director: Isoroku Koga (Call of the Night)
  • Music: Tomoki Kikuya (Bocchi the Rock!)
  • Sound Director: Yasunori Ebina
  • Sound Effects: Hiromune Kurahashi (Otonarium)

Cast

The voice cast features a mix of established and rising talents:

  • Keiichiro Nagumo: Junichi Suwabe
  • Mashiro: Kana Hanazawa
  • Yuu Asunaro: Tomohiro Yamaguchi
  • Hana Kazamaki: Aya Hirano
  • Nipple-Tasting Man/Cross Chest Hair Man/Man Who Likes Ropes: Tomokazu Sugita
  • Cerberus: Chado Horii
  • Taro Nezu: Kengo Kawanishi
  • Azuha Hoshino: Fairouz Ai
  • Fuu-chan: Misaki Watada
  • Soya Mimasaka: Yasuyuki Kase
  • Coach: Hajime Iijima

Music

The opening theme song is “Suffer” performed by Taiiku Okazaki. The ending theme song is “GORI☆GORI Feez e-Girl!!”, a character song performed by Kana Hanazawa (as Mashiro) and Tomokazu Sugita (voicing a group of cheerful old men).

Story

“Detectives These Days Are Crazy!” revolves around Keiichiro Nagumo, a former ace detective who was renowned in his high school days for solving difficult cases. However, at 35, he’s past his prime, grappling with aching joints, dwindling fame, and a struggling detective agency. His life takes an unexpected turn when Mashiro Nakanishi, an enthusiastic high school girl, appears at his doorstep, eager to become his apprentice.

The story explores whether Mashiro can reignite Nagumo’s passion for detective work or simply add more chaos to his already complicated life. The series is a comedy, mystery that parodies the standards of teen detective stories as well as Japanese pop culture.

Manga

The original manga by Masakuni Igarashi began serialization in ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Maoh magazine in April 2016. As of August 2024, it has been compiled into 15 tankōbon volumes. One Peace Books is publishing the English version of the manga.

Themes and Tropes

“Detectives These Days Are Crazy!” distinguishes itself from other detective stories by focusing on a protagonist past his prime. It employs absurdist humor, slapstick, and parodies common manga tropes. The series explores themes of aging, relevance in a changing world, and the contrast between youthful energy and middle-aged disillusionment.

Reception

The manga has been praised for its humor and unique take on the detective genre. It is recommended for veteran manga readers who are familiar with common tropes and enjoy parodies of the genre. Newcomers to manga may find the series disorienting due to its rapidly changing visual styles and tones.

Where to Watch

The anime will be broadcast in Japan starting July 1, 2025. Streaming information for international audiences is yet to be announced, so stay tuned for updates.
