A Look Back at The Island of Giant Insects
The Island of Giant Insects (巨蟲列島, Kyochū Rettō) is a Japanese manga series written by Yasutaka Fujimi and initially illustrated by Redice, later by Shu Hirose.
Origin and Publication
The original manga was first published online on Akita Shoten’s Champion Cross web platform from October 2014 to May 2018. It then moved to Manga Cross, where it ran from December 2018 to March 2019. Akita Shoten compiled the chapters into six tankōbon volumes, released between March 2015 and June 2019.
Storyline
The series begins with Mutsumi Oribe and her classmates on a school trip when their plane crashes, leaving them stranded on an uncharted island. The survivors quickly discover that the island is infested with monstrously oversized insects. The students must use their wits and skills to survive against these giant predators and other dangers lurking on the island, including hostile fellow survivors. As they journey they confront a colossal Queen insect with overwhelming strength and intellect, that threatens their survival. In the end, the remaining students escape the island, changed forever by their harrowing experiences, they return to their lives with newfound strength and determination, remembering the lessons they learned about the island.
Anime Adaptations
The Island of Giant Insects has been adapted into an anime series. An original animation DVD (OAD) was released with the sixth and final volume of the manga in June 2019, serving as a prologue to future adaptations. A theatrical film edition of the anime opened in Japan in January 2020. Crunchyroll streamed the anime worldwide (excluding Asia).
Spin-Off Manga
A spin-off manga, Mountain of Giant Insects (巨蟲山脈, Kyochū Sanmyaku), illustrated by Yusuke Sazanami, was published in Akita Shoten’s Dokodemo Young Champion web magazine from November 2019 to August 2024. Akita Shoten published eight tankōbon volumes for the spin-off, from July 2020 to January 2025. The story follows a new group of characters who find themselves in a tunnel that leads to a nest of giant insects.
‘Die! The Island of Giant Insects’
Die! The Island of Giant Insects (大巨蟲列島, Dai Kyochū Rettō) launched on Manga Cross in April 2019 as a direct sequel to the original series. Akita Shoten released the 14th compiled book volume in December 2024. The manga moved to Champion Cross in May 2024.

The Island of Giant Insects is known for its survival horror elements, featuring gory deaths and often disturbing content. Creator Yasutaka Fujimi has described the work as a “fresh take on the survival horror and ero-gro” genres, the latter referring to erotic and grotesque content.
