What’s Synduality: Noir About?

The anime is set in the year 2242, on a Earth ravaged by the “Tears of the New Moon” disaster. Humanity has retreated to scattered, bubble-like cities to escape the toxic environment and hostile creatures known as Enders. Survival depends on collecting AO crystals, a new energy source.

Drifters are tasked with venturing into the dangerous wastelands to gather these crystals, piloting armed, bipedal vehicles called Coffins. They are supported by Magus, combat androids who provide assistance and combat support.

The story follows Kanata, an aspiring Drifter, who dreams of following in his parents’ footsteps. His life takes an unexpected turn when he discovers Noir, a Magus in stasis, during an exploration. Noir has lost her memories but possesses exceptional combat abilities. Kanata partners with Noir, and together they begin to discover what it truly takes to be a Drifter.

What’s The Fable About?

The Fable centers around a legendary hitman, known only as Fable, who is ordered by his boss to take a year-long hiatus from killing. He’s given a new identity, Akira Sato, and must live a normal life in Osaka with his partner, Yoko, who poses as his sister.

Living as a normal person proves to be more challenging than Fable anticipated. He has to learn to socialize, find a job, and navigate everyday situations without resorting to his deadly skills. However, his past and abilities as an assassin continue to draw trouble his way.

Manga Origins and Live-Action Adaptations

The Fable manga was serialized in Weekly Young Magazine from 2014 to 2019, followed by a sequel series, The Fable: The Second Contact, from 2021 to 2023. A third series, The Fable: The Third Secret, began serialization in March 2025. The manga has achieved widespread success, with over 25 million copies in circulation as of June 2024.

The manga’s popularity also led to two live-action film adaptations, released in Japan in 2019 and 2021.
