Flag Pictures has officially announced the main cast and staff for the highly anticipated “Kabuki Kōkyōkyoku Dai Kyū-ban Evangelion” (Kabuki Symphony No. 9 Evangelion) project, a unique collaboration between Khara and Shochiku. This special kabuki performance is set to be a highlight of the “EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION” festival, celebrating three decades of the iconic franchise. The performance will take place on the final day of the festival, February 23, 2026, at the Yokohama Arena in Kanagawa Prefecture.
Star-Studded Cast Brings Iconic Evangelion Characters to Kabuki Stage
The stage will feature renowned kabuki actors taking on pivotal roles from the Neon Genesis Evangelion series. Kichitarō Kamimura, known for his work in adaptations like Kabuki Final Fantasy X and Touken Ranbu, will portray the protagonist, Shinji Ikari. Joining him is Sakon Onoe, who will bring the enigmatic Kaworu Nagisa to life. Onoe expressed his honor in being part of this milestone event, noting the strong impact and distinctive worldview of Evangelion and his excitement to see it expressed through kabuki.
Experienced Staff to Blend Anime and Traditional Japanese Theater
Behind the scenes, a talented team is working to merge the futuristic world of Evangelion with the rich traditions of kabuki. Kazuhisa Tobe is at the helm, serving as both director and scriptwriter for the performance. The choreography will be handled by Kanjurō Fujima, ensuring a captivating visual spectacle. Providing the musical landscape for this groundbreaking production is Gagaku musician Fumihiko Yamada, who is composing the score.

In addition to the stage events, the festival will include an exhibition area showcasing works from Khara creators, offering fans a deeper dive into the creative history of the franchise.
This collaboration marks the first official instance of the Evangelion series being adapted into traditional kabuki theater, promising a unique blend of classical dance, traditional Japanese music, and projected imagery.
