The popular action RPG Fate/Samurai Remnant is officially receiving a manga adaptation, set to launch on July 28. The new series will be illustrated by Mugetsu, with Type-Moon and Koei Tecmo Games credited for the original work.
The announcement came via the official X (formerly Twitter) account for Kadokawa’s Comptiq magazine and the Type-Moon Comic Ace free manga website. More details about the manga are expected to be revealed in Type-Moon Ace Volume 17, which releases on the same day as the manga’s launch.
The World of Fate/Samurai Remnant
Fate/Samurai Remnant is a 2023 action role-playing video game co-developed by Omega Force and Kou Shibusawa, in cooperation with Aniplex and Type-Moon, and published by Koei Tecmo. It is an entry in the broader Fate series, known for its unique take on historical and mythological figures battling for powerful artifacts.
Setting and Story
The game is set in Edo-era Japan, specifically the 4th year of the Keian Era, which is several decades after a period of intense conflict. Despite the relative peace, a hidden battle known as the “Waxing Moon Ritual” begins, involving seven pairs of Masters and their summoned Heroic Spirits, known as Servants.
Players take on the role of Miyamoto Iori, a young ronin residing in Asakusa, Edo, who finds himself unexpectedly drawn into this violent Holy Grail War. Iori is the student and adopted son of the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, and he practices the Niten Ichiryu style of swordsmanship. His journey in the game involves his developing bond with his summoned Servant, Saber, an impulsive and arrogant youth wielding a peerless sword.
Gameplay Elements
The Fate/Samurai Remnant game features hack-and-slash combat with elements reminiscent of Musou-style gameplay, combined with action RPG mechanics like dodging and exploiting enemy weaknesses. Players control Iori and can issue commands to their Servant, even taking full control of the Servant in certain situations. The game also incorporates RPG elements such as a magecraft workshop for character upgrades, new passive abilities, and skill trees for both Iori and his Servants. The open-world aspect allows for exploration of recreated Edo districts like Yoshiwara, Kanda, and Akasaka.
The Manga Artist: Mugetsu
The manga adaptation will be drawn by Mugetsu. Mugetsu has a background in illustrating for the Fate franchise, having previously provided artwork for Craft Essences in Fate/Grand Order and worked on Fate/Grand Order: Holy Grail Front. They also illustrated a prequel manga to Fate/Samurai Remnant and worked on Sword Art Online: Progressive – Canon of the Golden Rule.

Fate/Samurai Remnant was released on September 28, 2023, in Japan, and on September 29, 2023, internationally. The game is available on multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC via Steam.
