The anime adaptation of Shigeru Sagazaki’s light novel series, From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman, has revealed additional cast members in its fourth promotional video. The series, which premiered on April 5, 2025, is exclusively streaming on Amazon Prime Video worldwide.
New Recruits Join the Adventure
The latest promotional video introduces two new characters to the ensemble:
- Rose Marblehart: Voiced by Ai Kayano, Rose is the lieutenant of the Holy Order of the Church of Sphene.
- Gatoga Lazorne: Hidenobu Kiuchi lends his voice to Gatoga Lazorne, the broad-minded Knight Commander of the Holy Order of the Church of Sphene.
These additions promise to bring new dynamics and challenges to the protagonist’s journey.
The Story So Far
From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman tells the story of Beryl Gardinant, a self-proclaimed “humble old man” who works as a sword instructor in a rural village dojo. Once dreaming of glory as a master swordsman, Beryl’s quiet life is disrupted when a former pupil, now a famous knight, appoints him as a special instructor for the knights of the Liberion Order.
This appointment takes him to the capital, where he reunites with former students—elite knights, a skilled wizard, and a high-ranking adventurer—all seeking his guidance. As Beryl questions why these accomplished individuals need his help, he navigates his new role and the challenges it brings.
Production Team
The anime is directed by Akio Kazumi at studios Passione and Hayabusa Film. Kunihiko Okada is in charge of series composition, while Satsuki Hayasaki handles character designs and serves as chief animation director. Yasuharu Takanashi composes the music.

A Humble Beginning
The original light novel series, From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman: My Hotshot Disciples Are All Grown Up Now and They Won’t Leave Me Alone (Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru: Tada no Inaka no Kenjutsu Shihan Datta noni, Taisei Shita Deshitachi ga Ore o Hottekurenai Ken), is written by Shigeru Sagazaki and illustrated by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima. It began serialization on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website in November 2020 and was later acquired by Square Enix in April 2021. J-Novel Club publishes the official English version of the light novels.
