A highly anticipated sequel to the GATE anime, titled GATE 2: Tides of Conflict, has been officially announced, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the original series’ premiere. This new anime adaptation will draw its narrative from Takumi Yanai’s “Season 2” light novels, which introduce a fresh focus on the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and an entirely new cast of characters.
A Decade in the Making: The Return of GATE
The original GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There! anime, adapted from Takumi Yanai’s light novel series, first captivated audiences in 2015, with its second half airing in 2016. The series quickly gained recognition for its unique blend of military action and fantasy, depicting modern Japanese Self-Defense Forces operating in a parallel world accessed through a mysterious “Gate.” After a decade, the announcement of GATE 2: Tides of Conflict signals a continuation of this popular franchise, moving beyond the direct storyline of the first anime.
Shifting Focus: The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Takes Center Stage
Unlike its predecessor, which primarily followed Youji Itami and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), GATE 2: Tides of Conflict will delve into the exploits of the JMSDF. This shift is directly in line with the “Season 2” light novels, GATE SEASON2 Jieitai Kano Umi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri (translated as GATE Season 2: The Self-Defense Forces Fight Like This in the Sea). The sequel novels, published between 2017 and 2020, center on characters from the maritime branch of the SDF, embarking on new missions and facing different challenges in the Special Region’s waterways.
The plot for GATE 2: Tides of Conflict revolves around a high-stakes rescue mission following the kidnapping of an American journalist in the Special Region’s turbulent seas. This premise promises to deliver large-scale sea battles and intricate political drama, expanding the scope of the GATE universe beyond land-based operations.
Production Details and Creative Team
The animation production for GATE 2: Tides of Conflict will be handled by Studio M2, known for its work on PLUTO. While a new director, Tōru Takahashi (known for Orphen: The Revenge and Inari Kon Kon), will helm the project, Tatsuhiko Urahata is set to return from the first GATE anime to manage the series composition and script. Character designs will be overseen by Shigeru Fujita, who has previously contributed to titles such as Monster and Pluto. The production committee includes Kasagi Labo, Oshi, and GENCO.
Oshi Platform’s Role in Fan Engagement
Notably, the announcement of GATE 2: Tides of Conflict was made in partnership with Oshi, a digital platform that aims to foster direct fan contribution to anime production. Oshi states that fans will have the opportunity to “actively contribute” to the anime’s development, offering exclusive behind-the-scenes content and engagement opportunities.
The ‘Season 2’ Light Novels and Their Continuation
The GATE SEASON2 Jieitai Kano Umi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri light novel series is a direct continuation of Takumi Yanai’s original GATE series. These sequel novels began publication in 2017, with five volumes released between then and 2020. A new bunkoban (pocket-sized) version with updated illustrations was also released between 2020 and 2022. It is important to note that while the original GATE light novel series is complete, the “Season 2” light novel series has not released a new volume since 2020.
The anime adaptation of GATE 2: Tides of Conflict will specifically adapt the first two volumes of the “Season 2” sequel series. While no official release window has been announced for the anime, production is underway, with a teaser visual and animation expected to be unveiled in the coming year.
