In the post-apocalyptic world of Apocalypse Hotel, where humanity has fled Earth due to an unbreathable atmosphere, the robot staff of the Gingarou Hotel in Ginza diligently maintain operations, awaiting the return of their guests. Episode 5 continues this unique blend of slice-of-life, comedy, and sci-fi, offering heartwarming moments and thought-provoking themes.

A Slime Romance Blossoms

Episode 5 introduces a new alien species to the hotel: a couple of sentient slime creatures. Their initial display of affection quickly turns sour, resulting in a breakup. Yachiyo, the gynoid concierge, reflects on the nature of change, reassuring one of the heartbroken aliens that “being able to never stop changing is a wonderful trait”. This encapsulates the episode’s theme: embracing the inevitability of change and finding beauty in the unknown.

Whiskey Business

The Tanuki family, the Prociones, are back, this time assisting Yachiyo and the staff in restoring a nearby distillery to create whiskey. This subplot highlights the dedication of the hotel staff to fulfilling the dream of the hotel’s director. The whiskey-making process becomes a metaphor for the passage of time and the constant evolution of life. The episode cleverly portrays the trial-and-error involved in perfecting the whiskey’s flavor, mirroring the unpredictable nature of life itself.

A Bombshell Discovery

A humorous highlight of the episode is the revelation that Yachiyo seemingly grows taller and develops a more mature figure every time she drinks whiskey. This running gag adds a touch of lightheartedness to the otherwise melancholic atmosphere of the anime.

Ponko’s Progress

Ponko, the Tanukian who has joined the hotel staff, continues to adapt to her new role. While she hasn’t yet had the opportunity to attend to a guest directly, her involvement in the whiskey-making process and her assistance to Yachiyo demonstrate her growing commitment to the hotel.

Lingering Questions

Episode 5 also raises intriguing questions about the world of Apocalypse Hotel. How did the aliens find out about Earth and the Gingarou Hotel? Was it the hotel owner who perhaps launched an interstellar ad campaign? Some viewers speculate that the aliens could even be evolved forms of humans.

Themes of Change and Hope

Apocalypse Hotel continues to impress with its blend of humor, heart, and philosophical musings. Episode 5 reinforces the anime’s central themes of embracing change, finding beauty in the unknown, and maintaining hope in the face of despair. The dedication of the robot staff to preserving the memory of humanity, even as they cater to alien guests, is both touching and inspiring.

A Word from Fans

Fans have reacted positively to Episode 5, praising its heartwarming moments, humorous gags, and thought-provoking themes. Viewers particularly enjoyed the slime romance subplot, the whiskey-making storyline, and Yachiyo’s ever-changing appearance.

Where to Watch

Apocalypse Hotel is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.

Final Thoughts

Apocalypse Hotel Episode 5 is another excellent installment in this unique and charming anime series. With its blend of slice-of-life, comedy, and sci-fi, the show continues to explore themes of change, hope, and the enduring power of the human spirit, even in a world devoid of humans. The episode leaves viewers eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the story of the Gingarou Hotel and its dedicated staff.
