The “Girls Band Cry” anime is hitting theaters with a two-part compilation film! Get ready to relive the emotional journey of Nina and her bandmates as they chase their dreams in the music world. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming films.

What is Girls Band Cry?

“Girls Band Cry,” abbreviated as GaruKura, is an original Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation. The series is a multimedia project that began in 2023, in collaboration with Agehasprings and Universal Music Japan, with a strong focus on music. The anime series aired from April to June 2024, totaling 13 episodes.

The story follows Nina Iseri, a 17-year-old high school dropout who moves to Tokyo (specifically Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture) to prove her independence and find success. She encounters Momoka Kawaragi, a guitarist, and they discover a shared love for music. Together, they form a band called Togenashi Togeari with other girls from diverse backgrounds. The band becomes an outlet for their raw emotions as they navigate the challenges of the music scene and their personal struggles.

Compilation Films Announced

Following the conclusion of the anime series, a two-part compilation film was announced in September 2024. These films will re-tell the story of “Girls Band Cry” on the big screen, highlighting the key moments and emotional arcs of the series.

Film Titles and Release Dates

The two films have official titles and release dates:

  • Part 1: Seishun Kyōsōkyoku (青春狂走曲), which translates to “Rhapsody of Youth,” will premiere on October 3, 2025.
  • Part 2: Nā, Mirai. (なぁ、未来。), which translates to “Hey, Future,” will screen on November 14, 2025.

What to Expect

The compilation films will likely condense the 13-episode anime series into two parts, focusing on the main plot points and character development. Fans can anticipate seeing the formation of Togenashi Togeari, the challenges they face in the music industry, and the personal growth of each band member. The films will also likely feature the band’s music, which is a central element of the series.

Returning Cast and Staff

The team behind the original anime series is returning for the compilation films:

  • Director: Kazuo Sakai (known for “Love Live! Sunshine!!”)
  • Series Composition: Jukki Hanada (also worked on “Love Live! Sunshine!!” and “The Dangers in My Heart”)
  • Character Designer: Nari Teshima (VTuber Hoshimachi Suisei’s character designer)
  • CGI Directors: Mari Kondō and Jae Hoon Jung
  • Music Composer: Kenji Tamai (from agehasprings)
  • Animation Production: Toei Animation

The voice cast for the Togenashi Togeari band includes:

  • Rina as Nina Iseri (vocalist)
  • Yuri as Momoka Kawaragi (guitarist)
  • Mirei as Subaru Awa (drummer)
  • Nagito as Tomo Ebizuka (keyboardist)
  • Shuuri as Rupa (bassist)

It was previously announced in July 2024 that Mirei and Natsu (voice of Tomo Ebizuka) were going on hiatus due to health reasons. However, as of April 2025, both Natsu and Mirei are confirmed to be returning to dubbing.

Story and Themes

“Girls Band Cry” explores themes of finding one’s place, overcoming adversity, and the power of music. The series delves into the struggles of young women trying to find their voices and pursue their passions in a challenging world. Each member of Togenashi Togeari has their own personal battles, but their shared love for music unites them and gives them the strength to persevere.

The anime’s synopsis highlights these themes:

  • Nina, a high school dropout, seeks independence and a fresh start in Tokyo.
  • The girls are betrayed by friends and abandoned by parents.
  • Despite facing constant setbacks, they find solace and belonging in music.

Where to Watch

The original “Girls Band Cry” anime series is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.

The Music of Girls Band Cry

Music is an integral part of “Girls Band Cry.” The band Togenashi Togeari performs original songs that reflect their emotions and experiences.

A Promising Future

The announcement of the compilation films signals a continued interest in the “Girls Band Cry” franchise. The return of the main cast and staff ensures that the films will stay true to the spirit of the original series. Fans can look forward to reliving the emotional highs and lows of Nina and Togenashi Togeari as they chase their dreams on the big screen.
