Anime distributor GKIDS has announced that it will bring a new 4K restoration of Satoshi Kon’s influential psychological thriller, Perfect Blue, to U.S. cinemas, with screenings set to commence on October 3. The theatrical run will offer American audiences a chance to experience the critically acclaimed 1997 film with enhanced visual fidelity.
A Deep Dive into Satoshi Kon’s Acclaimed Debut
Perfect Blue marks the directorial feature debut of the late Satoshi Kon, a visionary filmmaker renowned for his mind-bending narratives in works such as Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent, and Paprika. The film is loosely based on Yoshikazu Takeuchi’s novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis and is celebrated for its intricate exploration of identity, reality, and the darker side of fame. Its themes remain highly relevant, particularly in an era dominated by social media and blurred lines between public and private personas.
The story centers on Mima Kirigoe, a pop idol who decides to leave her girl group to pursue an acting career. As she transitions into a more mature role on a television show, Mima finds herself increasingly stalked by an obsessive fan, while simultaneously grappling with a dissolving sense of reality, haunted by visions of her former idol self. This psychological descent is punctuated by a series of unsettling events and murders, drawing the audience into Mima’s spiraling paranoia.
The film carries a strong adult content warning due to animated sequences depicting graphic violence and nudity, making it recommended only for audiences 17 years and older.
The Enduring Legacy of Perfect Blue
Since its premiere in 1997, Perfect Blue has been widely hailed as one of the most important animated films of all time, leaving a significant impact on animators and Hollywood directors alike. Its influence can be seen in various other psychological thrillers and cinematic works. The 4K remaster ensures that new and returning viewers can experience Kon’s meticulously crafted visuals and unsettling atmosphere as intended.
This isn’t the first time GKIDS has brought Perfect Blue to U.S. screens. The distributor, in partnership with Fathom Events, previously screened the film in approximately 500 U.S. theaters in September 2018 for a two-day event, generating over $420,000 at the box office. It also saw screenings as part of Anime Expo’s AX Cinema Nights in September 2023, celebrating its 25th anniversary.
For those who prefer home viewing, GKIDS and Shout! Factory released the film on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in March 2019, followed by a steelbook edition in September 2021. A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release is also slated for Japan in February 2025.
Screening Details and Where to Find Tickets
While the initial announcement confirms an October 3 opening, specific theater listings and additional screening dates beyond this initial date are typically released closer to the event. Moviegoers interested in attending the 4K restoration screenings of Perfect Blue should monitor the official GKIDS website and local cinema listings for ticket availability and showtimes.
