GKIDS has officially released a new 4K trailer for the restored version of Satoshi Kon’s seminal psychological thriller, Perfect Blue, confirming its theatrical return to U.S. cinemas on October 3. The announcement, which initially broke during GKIDS’ panel at Anime NYC, has ignited excitement among long-time fans and promises a visually enhanced experience for new audiences to witness the chilling anime classic.

The Return of a Masterpiece: ‘Perfect Blue’ in 4K

Satoshi Kon’s 1997 directorial debut, Perfect Blue, is widely regarded as a landmark in animated psychological suspense, influencing numerous filmmakers and earning critical acclaim since its original release. The new 4K restoration aims to bring the film’s intricate animation and unsettling atmosphere to the big screen with unprecedented clarity. This theatrical re-release is set for October 3rd in the United States, offering both subtitled and English-dubbed versions on separate dates, consistent with GKIDS’ previous showings.

Film’s Enduring Legacy and Impact

Perfect Blue delves into the dark side of celebrity, identity, and obsession through the story of Mima Kirigoe, a pop idol who transitions to an acting career. As Mima grapples with her new professional path, she faces intense fan backlash, a relentless stalker, and a blurring line between reality and fantasy, leading to a harrowing psychological breakdown. The film’s themes of toxic fandom, online identity, and the dehumanizing effects of fame remain strikingly relevant, even decades after its debut, resonating particularly strongly in the age of social media.

Directors such as Darren Aronofsky have openly cited Perfect Blue as a major inspiration for their work, including films like Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, underscoring its profound impact on cinema beyond animation. The film’s nuanced exploration of a fractured narrative and media distortion continues to captivate and disturb audiences, solidifying its status as a cult classic and a masterpiece of psychological horror.

GKIDS’ Commitment to Anime Preservation

GKIDS, known for its dedication to preserving and distributing animated masterworks, has been instrumental in bringing Perfect Blue back to theaters multiple times. Previous theatrical runs include a two-day event in September 2018 in partnership with Fathom Events, which screened in approximately 500 U.S. theaters and earned over $420,000 at the box office. More recently, it was screened in September 2023 as part of Anime Expo’s AX Cinema Nights to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary. These efforts ensure that new generations of fans have the opportunity to experience such influential works on the big screen.

In addition to theatrical releases, GKIDS and Shout! Factory have also released the film on Blu-ray Disc and DVD, including a steelbook edition, further cementing its availability for home viewing. The upcoming 4K restoration offers the most pristine presentation of Kon’s vision to date.

The 4K trailer offers a glimpse into the enhanced visuals of the restored film, promising a more immersive and intense experience of Mima’s terrifying journey into psychological unraveling. Fans can anticipate securing tickets for the October 3rd release as the date approaches.
