The Premise: Reliving High School with a Second Chance
The core narrative of Haibara’s Teenage New Game+ revolves around Natsuki Haibara, a socially anxious college senior burdened by regrets from his high school years. He often fantasized about a better adolescence, and unexpectedly, he finds himself transported seven years into the past, specifically one month before his first year of high school begins.
Armed with the knowledge of his past mistakes and the desire for a “rainbow-colored youth,” Natsuki embarks on a mission to rewrite his high school experience. His goals include avoiding his previous missteps, climbing the social ladder, and ultimately ending up with the girl of his dreams. To achieve this, he dedicates himself to self-improvement, which includes a workout regimen, seeking advice from online guides, and enlisting the help of his childhood friend. However, the story explores the complexities of time travel and the challenges of changing one’s past, emphasizing that not everything will go smoothly just because he has a second chance. As the series progresses, Natsuki’s actions lead to unforeseen impacts on those around him, prompting questions about whether all the changes he instigates are truly positive.
