The highly anticipated original anime series, “Goodbye, Lara” (Sayonara Lara), has revealed that Hana Hishikawa will portray the titular character, Lara. Kadokawa unveiled a new teaser visual and promotional video for the anime, confirming Hishikawa’s role as the voice of the mermaid protagonist.

The “Goodbye, Lara” anime is an original television series from animation studio Kinema Citrus, created to commemorate the studio’s 15th anniversary. It is slated to premiere in 2026.

Reimagining a Classic Tale

“Goodbye, Lara” offers a unique twist on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale, “The Little Mermaid.” The narrative follows Lara, a mermaid who, after falling in love with a human prince and making a forbidden wish, tragically died and turned into bubbles 200 years prior. She is subsequently reborn in modern-day Japan, specifically in Lake Biwa, where she endeavors to adjust to the human world and once again search for true love.

Production Details and Staff

The series is directed by Takushi Koide, with Anna Kawahara overseeing the series scripts. Shiori Tani is responsible for the character designs, and Yuma Yamaguchi is composing the music. Kinema Citrus, known for works such as “Made in Abyss” and “The Rising of the Shield Hero,” is the animation studio behind the project. Hana Hishikawa’s voice, described as soft and emotional, is believed to be well-suited for the character of Lara, hinting at a deep and quiet emotional core for the protagonist.
