What is Hell Mode About?
Hell Mode follows the journey of Yamada Kenichi, a hardcore gamer who finds himself in a void after his favorite online game shuts down its servers. Disillusioned by the “easy mode” nature of modern games, he stumbles upon an untitled game that promises an unparalleled challenge. Without hesitation, Kenichi selects the “Hell Mode” difficulty, only to find himself reincarnated as a serf named Allen in another world.
The narrative centers on Allen’s quest to unravel the mysteries of his unique Summoner class in a world devoid of walkthroughs or online guides, forcing him to rely on his gaming instincts to rise to the top.
From Web Novel to Anime
The Hell Mode series originated as a web novel written by Hamuo, which began serialization on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in November 2019. Earth Star Entertainment later acquired the series and began publishing it as a light novel with illustrations by Mo in July 2020. As of March 2025, eleven volumes of the light novel have been released.
In addition to the light novel, a manga adaptation by Enji Tetta has been serialized online via Earth Star Entertainment’s Comic Earth Star website since October 2020. Both the light novel and manga adaptations are licensed in English by J-Novel Club.
The anime adaptation was first announced for a 2025 release, but it has now been confirmed to debut in January 2026. Further details regarding the anime’s production staff are expected to be announced in the future.
