The popular “Horror Collector” (Kyofu Collector) children’s novel series is officially getting a TV anime adaptation, slated to premiere in Fall 2026. NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, announced the news, generating anticipation among fans of the spooky middle-grade series.

Unveiling the World of “Horror Collector”

The “Horror Collector” series, originally titled “Kyofu Collector,” delves into a world where urban legends manifest as tangible threats. Written by Midori Sato and Norio Tsuruta, with original character designs by Yon, the novels have captivated young readers with their blend of mystery and horror. The stories often explore internet creepypastas, cryptid sightings, paranormal activity, and unsolved disappearances, weaving them into compelling narratives.

The Premise: Collecting Manifested Urban Legends

At the heart of the “Horror Collector” narrative is Fushigi Senno, a mysterious boy in a red hood. His mission involves traversing towns and appearing wherever strange phenomena occur, actively collecting these manifested urban legends. The series poses the intriguing question of whether he is a beacon of hope against these horrors or living proof of their terrifying reality. The novels are known for featuring stories that are “just scary enough to be creepy without keeping you awake at night,” making them suitable for their middle-grade audience.

The Journey from Novels to Anime

The “Horror Collector” franchise has seen considerable growth since its inception. The original novel series first launched in June 2015, with over 20 volumes released as of December 2022. Beyond the literary success, the series also expanded into manga. Yen Press’s JY imprint announced in October 2024 that it would publish a manga adaptation of the “Horror Collector” novels, with artwork by Niko Yuki, further broadening the series’ reach. This upcoming TV anime adaptation marks another significant milestone, bringing the thrilling tales to a new visual medium.

Anticipation for the Fall 2026 Premiere

While specific details regarding the anime’s production staff, voice cast, and exact episode count are yet to be fully disclosed, the announcement by NHK for a Fall 2026 release has already sparked excitement. Fans are eager to see how the unique blend of mystery, supernatural elements, and Asian folklore from the novels will be translated into animation. The series is expected to resonate with viewers who appreciate spooky, supernatural horror tailored for a younger audience.
