John Tarachine’s critically acclaimed manga series, Credits Roll Into The Sea (Umi ga Hashiru Endroll), published its final chapter in Akita Shoten’s Mystery Bonita magazine on Thursday. The conclusion of the main story will be followed by a special spinoff chapter slated for release in early January, appearing in the magazine’s February issue. The ninth compiled book volume will serve as the final volume for the series.
The manga, which garnered significant praise and numerous nominations, launched in October 2020.
The Journey of Umiko Chino: Diving into Filmmaking
Credits Roll Into The Sea centers on Umiko Chino, a 65-year-old retired woman grappling with the loss of her husband. Her journey takes an unexpected turn when she revisits a movie theater after decades and encounters Kai, a university student majoring in film. Umiko finds herself drawn to observing audience reactions, a fascination Kai recognizes and challenges, leading her to embark on a new path: enrolling in film school alongside younger students. The series explores themes of rediscovery, intergenerational connections, and pursuing one’s passions regardless of age.
Accolades and Recognition for Credits Roll Into The Sea
Throughout its serialization, Credits Roll Into The Sea received considerable recognition. The manga topped the rankings for female readers in the 2022 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook and secured the #6 spot in the 2023 edition. It was also ranked ninth in the 15th Manga Taisho awards in 2022. Furthermore, the series earned nominations for the esteemed Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize twice, in both 2023 and 2025. By July 2025, the manga had over 1 million copies in circulation.
English Release and John Tarachine’s Other Works
Dark Horse Comics announced its license of Credits Roll Into The Sea for English publication in August 2025. The first English volume is scheduled to debut on March 3, 2026, with Jocelyne Allen handling the translation.
John Tarachine is also known for other works, including Witch of Thistle Castle (Azami no Shiro no Majo), which ran from February 2019 to December 2020. This four-volume series was also licensed and released in English by Titan Comics. Other notable works by Tarachine include Goodnight, I Love You.
