GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of animation, has acquired the North American theatrical distribution rights to JUJUTSU KAISEN: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie. The film will be screened in theaters nationwide starting July 16, 2025, in both original Japanese and English dubbed versions.

A Look Back at Gojo and Geto’s Past

JUJUTSU KAISEN: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie revisits the “Hidden Inventory / Premature Death” story arc from the second season of the JUJUTSU KAISEN series. This arc explores the younger days of fan-favorite characters Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, highlighting their deep bond and the fateful mission that tested it.

Synopsis

Before becoming enemies, Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were high school classmates and friends. As two of the most powerful sorcerers, they are tasked with protecting Riko Amanai, a student chosen to be sacrificed as the Star Plasma Vessel. Pursued by a religious cult and other curse users, Gojo and Geto are the only sorcerers capable of carrying out this difficult task. However, this mission will challenge them in unimaginable ways and ultimately set their destinies.

Production

The film is produced by TOHO animation and animated by MAPPA studio. Shota Goshozono, who directed Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 17, Ranking of Kings Episode 21, and was a storyboard artist and episode director for Chainsaw Man Episode 8, took over as director from Sunghoo Park for the “Hidden Inventory/Premature Death Arc”.

Music

The film features an all-new acoustic version of Tatsuya Kitani’s “Where Our Blue Is,” which was the opening theme song for the “Hidden Inventory / Premature Death” arc during its television broadcast. The original theme has garnered over 100 million views on YouTube and over 200 million streams on Spotify.

Release Details

JUJUTSU KAISEN: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie will premiere in Japan on May 30, 2025. GKIDS will release the film in North American theaters on July 16, 2025.

What to Expect

Compilation movies are typically created by the same team that worked on the series, suggesting a similar level of quality to the anime. If the film is commercially successful in Japan, other series may follow suit.

About Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. It was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from March 2018 to September 2024, with its chapters collected in 28 tankobon volumes as of October 2024. By September 2024, the manga had over 100 million copies in circulation, including related novels.

Anime Adaptations

The first anime adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen premiered in October 2020 and ran for 24 episodes. A movie adaptation of the Jujutsu Kaisen prequel, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, premiered in Japan in December 2021 and was released with English subtitles and an English dub in the U.S. and Canada in March 2022. The second season of the anime premiered in July 2023 and aired for two cours (quarters of a year). It adapted both the “Hidden Inventory / Premature Death” and the “Shibuya Incident” arcs of the manga.

Reception

The Jujutsu Kaisen anime series has become a global phenomenon. Season 2 wrapped up in December 2023 and was awarded “Anime of the Year” at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.

What’s Next?

A sequel adapting the manga’s “Culling Game” arc has been announced.
