Kadokawa has initiated the English simulpub release of The Villainess Is a Boy! (Akuyaku Reijō, Ore) manga, with the first chapter now available on the BookWalker Global site as of July 26. The series is written by Noa Nekoyashiki and features art by Seira Minami, known as the illustrator for the The Rising of the Shield Hero light novels. This new release is part of Kadokawa’s broader strategy to reduce the gap between Japanese and English publication dates for its manga and light novel titles, aiming for near-simultaneous distribution.

The Story of The Villainess Is a Boy!

The manga introduces a unique twist on the popular “villainess” trope. The plot centers on an ordinary working man from Japan who finds himself reincarnated as Asuka, the villainess in a popular otome game titled “Love Revolution Kingdom.”

Navigating a Predetermined Fate

Asuka’s primary objective is to avoid an execution that awaits the villainess within the game’s narrative. To achieve this, the protagonist must prevent the villainous prince from falling in love with Asuka.

Unintended Consequences

Ironically, Asuka’s efforts to distance herself from the game’s male characters, including the prince, lead to an unexpected outcome: they become increasingly attracted to “her.” This creates a complicated dilemma for the protagonist, as both love and friendship could lead to the dreaded “dead end” of execution. The overarching desire for the reincarnated protagonist is simply to live their own life, free from the game’s tragic script.

Creators Behind the Series

The Villainess Is a Boy! marks a notable debut for its artist, Seira Minami, as this is her first manga series. Minami is already well-regarded for her illustrations in Yusagi Aneko’s The Rising of the Shield Hero light novel series, as well as its comedic spin-off light novels, The Reprise of the Spear Hero.

Kadokawa’s Simulpub Strategy

Kadokawa announced its simulpub initiative in August 2021, a move designed to drastically cut down the six-to-twelve-month production time traditionally required for English translations of their Japanese titles. The goal is to reduce this delay to a mere few days.

Expanding Global Reach

This strategy is part of Kadokawa’s larger ambition to increase its international revenue and expand its global presence, particularly in English and Chinese-speaking markets. By directly handling the localization and distribution of its titles through platforms like BookWalker Global, Kadokawa aims to deter piracy and provide fans with faster access to new content. The company plans to significantly increase its annual title output, aiming for 9,000 titles by the 2027 fiscal year.
