The highly anticipated second season of “Kaiju No. 8” has officially announced its premiere date, sending waves of excitement through the anime community. Fans can mark their calendars for July 19, 2025, when the series will debut on TV Tokyo and its affiliated channels at 11:00 p.m. JST (10:00 a.m. EDT). Adding to the thrill, a special side-story episode, “Hoshina’s Day Off,” will air on July 5, 2025, also on TV Tokyo and affiliates at 11:00 p.m JST (10:00 a.m. EDT).

Worldwide Streaming on X/Twitter

In an innovative move, “Kaiju No. 8” Season 2 will stream worldwide in real-time on X (formerly Twitter) as it airs in Japan. This simultaneous broadcast ensures that fans across the globe can experience the new episodes together, fostering a sense of community and shared excitement. The side-story episode “Hoshina’s Day Off” will also follow this streaming format.

What to Expect in Season 2

While specific details about the plot of Season 2 are still emerging, it is expected to cover significant arcs from the manga, potentially including the Kaiju Weapon Arc and the Compatible User Arc. These arcs promise intense battles, deeper character development, and the introduction of new challenges for Kafka Hibino as he grapples with his dual identity as Kaiju No. 8.

Gen Narumi’s Leadership

Season 2 is anticipated to highlight Gen Narumi’s leadership within the First Division. As Kafka’s supervisor, Narumi’s mentorship and skills as an Anti-Kaiju fighter will be crucial in guiding Kafka and the team through emerging threats.

Kafka’s Internal Struggles

Kafka’s journey to control his Kaiju abilities will intensify, adding a layer of internal conflict to the external battles against the Kaiju. His struggle to prove himself as an ally despite the distrust surrounding his powers will be a central theme.

“Hoshina’s Day Off”: A Glimpse of Levity

The special episode “Hoshina’s Day Off” offers a change of pace. This original side story focuses on Soshiro Hoshina, providing a glimpse into his life outside of combat. While details remain scarce, fans can anticipate a blend of humor and heart. The episode originally screened in Japanese cinemas as part of the “Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon” compilation film.

New Ending Theme

Adding to the excitement, the American band OneRepublic will perform the ending theme song for “Hoshina’s Day Off,” titled “Invincible (from Kaiju No. 8).”

Game Adaptation: Kaiju No. 8 the Game

Akatsuki Games is developing “Kaiju No. 8 the Game” for smartphones and PC (via Steam). The game is slated for release on August 31, 2025. The game features an original storyline centered on “identified monsters” from the past who reappear through “Monster Dimension Gates.”

New Character: Sagan Shinomiya

The game introduces Sagan Shinomiya, an original character voiced by Akari Kitō. Sagan is the adopted daughter of the Shinomiya family and leader of “CLOZER,” a special forces unit dedicated to closing dimensional gates.

Season 1 Recap

For those new to the series or needing a refresher, “Kaiju No. 8” follows Kafka Hibino, who works cleaning up after Kaiju battles in a world where these monsters are a constant threat. After a fateful encounter, Kafka gains the ability to transform into a Kaiju himself, leading to his recruitment by the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. The first season aired from April to June 2024 and covered Chapters 1 to 33 of the manga.

Key Characters

  • Kafka Hibino/Kaiju No. 8: The protagonist, who gains the ability to transform into a Kaiju.
  • Mina Ashiro: Kafka’s childhood friend and a rising star in the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force.
  • Reno Ichikawa: Kafka’s motivated colleague.
  • Soshiro Hoshina: A key member of the Defense Force.
  • Gen Narumi: The Captain of the First Division.

Production Team

The anime series is produced by Production I.G, with Studio Khara supervising the Kaiju designs and artworks. The direction is handled by Shigeyuki Miya and Tomomi Kamiya, with scripts by Ichirō Ōkouchi, character designs and chief animation direction by Tetsuya Nishio, art direction by Shinji Kimura, and monster designs by Mahiro Maeda.

Manga’s Success

The “Kaiju No. 8” manga, written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto, has been serialized on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ online platform since July 2020. As of March 2025, the manga has over 18 million copies in circulation.
