Homura Kawamoto, the writer best known for the thrilling and psychologically intense manga series Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, has launched a new manga series. This latest work expands Kawamoto’s diverse portfolio, adding another intriguing title to his already impressive bibliography.
A New Series Emerges
Kawamoto’s new manga is titled Kenka Oji-san – Namo Naki Chūnen, Tsuyo Sugiru. (喧嘩おじさん – 名も無き中年、強すぎる。), which roughly translates to “The Nameless Brawling Middle-Aged Man is Too Strong”. The series debuted on Kakao Japan’s Piccoma service.
Homura Kawamoto: A Prolific Creator
Homura Kawamoto began his career as a manga artist in 2009, initially publishing manga anonymously on the Nitosha manga website under the pseudonym Gyūnyū, meaning “milk”. In 2014, he launched Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler in Gangan Joker, which became his first major series. Kakegurui achieved significant commercial success, selling over five million copies and spawning numerous adaptations, including an anime television series, live-action dramas, and films. A spin-off manga, Kakegurui Twin, was launched in 2015.

He has also co-created anime series such as Build Divide (2021–2022) and High Card (2023). His project, High Card, is an original series for which he is in charge of creation, development, and the original comic, High Card – ♢9 No Mercy, which is serialized in Manga UP!. Kawamoto often collaborates with his older brother, Hikaru Muno, on various works, including Kakegurui and High Card.
Past Projects and Short-Lived Series
In 2021, Kawamoto launched Cheat Slayer in Monthly Dragon Age. However, the series was canceled after only one chapter due to similarities to other popular isekai series, which led to concerns about potential copyright issues or intentional denigration of other works.
Another recent manga project, Bōryoku Banzai (Hooray for Violence), with artist Nadainishi, began serialization in Weekly Young Magazine on March 3, 2025. This series is based on their one-shot manga, Koroshi to Uso no Marriage (Marriage of Murder and Lies), which appeared in the inaugural issue of Young Magazine Kakehiki in April 2024.
