Manga artist Kazuya Minekura is set to resume her Wild Adapter manga after a nine-year hiatus, with the new 50th chapter scheduled to debut on Ichijinsha’s Ichijin Plus web manga site when it relaunches on August 8. This marks the first new chapter since the 49th chapter was published on Ichijinsha’s Zero-Sum Online site in 2016. The series, known for its blend of action, mystery, and a “hard-boiled” genre, follows the story of ex-yakuza Makoto Kubota and the amnesiac Minoru Tokito as they delve into the dangerous drug “W.A.” and Minoru’s mysterious past.
A Long-Awaited Return for Fans
The resumption of Wild Adapter is highly anticipated by fans who have followed Minekura’s work and her journey through various health challenges. The manga, which began serialization in Tokuma Shoten’s bimonthly Chara magazine in 2000 before moving to Ichijinsha in 2011, has garnered a dedicated following. The series has also inspired two original video anime (OVA) adaptations, released in 2014 and 2015. Additionally, characters from Wild Adapter have appeared in Minekura’s Shiritsu Araiso Koutougakkou Seitokai Shikkoubu manga and its 2002 anime adaptation.
Wild Adapter‘s Publication History
Wild Adapter initially ran in Tokuma Shoten’s Chara magazine from 2000 to 2007. In 2011, the manga’s publication rights transferred to Ichijinsha, where it continued in Ichijinsha’s Zero-Sum Ward magazine until its cessation in May 2015, then moved to Zero-Sum Online. Ichijinsha has since republished previous compiled volumes, with the seventh volume released in July 2015. Tokyopop licensed the manga for North American release in 2006, publishing six volumes before closing its North American publishing division.
Kazuya Minekura’s Health Journey
Kazuya Minekura’s career has been significantly impacted by ongoing health issues, leading to several hiatuses for her manga series, including Wild Adapter and Saiyuki Reload Blast.
Initial Health Battles
In 2010, Minekura underwent surgery for ameloblastoma, a noncancerous tumor on her right upper jawbone. This extensive surgery resulted in the removal of part of her upper jawbone and bone around her right eye, causing difficulties with eating, pronunciation, and a permanent loss of sensation on the right side of her face. Despite these challenges, she was fitted with artificial prosthetics to aid in reconstruction and expressed gratitude for the immense fan support she received. She had previously faced other health issues, including a hysterectomy between 2004 and 2007.
Continued Health Struggles and Resumption of Work
Minekura slowed down the serialization of her manga in 2013 due to her health. More recently, in April 2021, she disclosed a diagnosis of spinal canal stenosis, which caused severe lower back pain and hindered her illustration work. She also revealed ongoing complications from her earlier jawbone surgery and various other medical problems, including “First Bite Syndrome” and issues with her ear and tear ducts. Despite these persistent health struggles, Minekura has shown incredible resilience, having recently resumed her Saiyuki Reload Blast manga in September 2024 after a five-year hiatus. Her dedication to her craft and her fans remains evident as she prepares to bring Wild Adapter back to publication.
