Kenji Hamaoka’s popular gag manga, Appare! Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku (Bravo! Super Radical Gag Family), has officially concluded its serialization in Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine. The final chapter appeared in the 44th issue, released on October 2, 2025. However, fans won’t have to wait long for more antics from the Osawagi family, as a fifth installment in the beloved series, titled Mōretsu! Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku (Extreme! Super Radical Gag Family), is slated to begin on November 13, 2025, in the same magazine.
The End of “Appare!” and the Dawn of “Mōretsu!”
The conclusion of Appare! Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku marks the end of the fourth series in the long-running franchise. The final chapter was featured with center color pages and carried a poignant message: “Goodbye is a promise to say hello tomorrow,” bringing its seven-year run to a close. Akita Shoten will publish the 24th and final compiled book volume of Appare! Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku on December 8.
The announcement of Mōretsu! Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku ensures the continuity of Hamaoka’s signature slapstick comedy. The new manga, which is the fifth title in the Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku series, will launch in Weekly Shōnen Champion‘s 50th issue on November 13. The debut issue is expected to feature two chapters, including a highly popular spin-off series.
A Legacy of Laughter: The “Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku” Franchise History
The Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku (Super Radical Gag Family) series has a rich history spanning over three decades, delighting readers with the exaggerated daily lives of elementary school student Kotetsu Ōsawagi and his eccentric family and friends in Urayasu City, near Tokyo.
The Original Run and Early Sequels
Kenji Hamaoka first launched the original Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku manga in Weekly Shōnen Champion in 1993. This initial run comprised 31 volumes and inspired a 33-episode television anime adaptation in 1998, directed by Akitarō Daichi at Studio DEEN.
Following the success of the original, two direct sequels were released:
- Ganso! Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku (Original! Super Radical Gag Family): This 28-volume series ran from 2002 to 2010.
- Maido! Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku (Always! Super Radical Gag Family): Beginning in 2010, this series concluded in 2018 with 24 volumes. Maido! Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku also received a television anime adaptation in 2014, with Akitarō Daichi returning as director.
The “Appare!” Era and Recent Adaptations
Appare! Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku, the just-concluded fourth installment, began its serialization in March 2018. Notably, its title was chosen from suggestions submitted by readers. The series even took a rare one-issue break in 2023—its first in 30 years—when Hamaoka embarked on a family trip.
Beyond manga and anime, the franchise also saw a live-action television series adaptation of Super Radical Gag Family, which premiered on TV Tokyo in April 2020. This long-standing commitment to various media formats underscores the enduring popularity of Hamaoka’s unique comedic vision.
With Mōretsu! Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku on the horizon, the Osawagi family’s hilarious escapades are set to continue, promising more laughter for their dedicated fanbase.
