The upcoming anime adaptation of “Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games” is generating buzz, and recent updates have fans even more excited. A new teaser reveals additional cast members, key staff details, and a surprising collaboration with Street Fighter 6. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new and why it matters:

Academy Meets Arcade: Story at a Glance

“Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games” (Japanese: 対ありでした。 ~お嬢さまは格闘ゲームなんてしない~, Tai Ari Deshita ~Ojō-sama wa Kakutō Gēmu Nante Shinai~, lit. “Thanks For the Match: Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games”) is a manga series by Eri Ejima. The story revolves around Aya Mitsuki, an ordinary girl who gets into the prestigious Kuromi Girls’ Academy on a scholarship. She admires Mio Yorue, nicknamed “Shirayuri-sama” for her beauty and grace. However, Aya discovers that Shirayuri-sama has a secret: she’s a hardcore gamer with a competitive spirit. Despite a school ban on video games, the girls bond over their shared love of fighting games. The series follows their journey as they navigate school life and the world of competitive gaming.

Seven Seas Entertainment, which licenses the manga in North America, describes the story as an “over-the-top comedy” where delicate young ladies indulge in hardcore gaming. The official English version of the manga highlights the contrast between the refined academy and Shirayui’s “trash-talking, combo-chaining, newbie-stomping, ruthless hardcore gamer” persona.

New Recruits: Cast and Staff Additions

The anime adaptation is directed by Shōta Ihata and produced by Diomedéa. Wataru Watari is handling the scripts, Mayuko Matsumoto is designing the characters, and Kana Hashiguchi is composing the music.

Here are the newly announced cast members:

  • Sayaka Sembongi as Yu Inui, described as a fun-loving mood maker.
  • Shimoji Shino as Tamaki Ichinose, the floor leader in charge of the fourth floor on the dormitory committee. Tamaki is secretly practicing fighting games in her own room because she admires someone.

Previously announced cast members include:

  • Ikumi Hasegawa (Ikuyo in BOCCHI THE ROCK!) as Aya Mitsuki.
  • Kana Ichinose (Uka in Honey Lemon Soda) as Mio Yorue.

Street Fighter 6 Enters the Ring

The teaser PV reveals that the anime will feature a collaboration with Street Fighter 6. The main characters, Aya and Mio, are shown engaged in a heated battle, and the game they’re playing is none other than Street Fighter 6. This collaboration suggests that the anime will incorporate elements of the popular fighting game, potentially including characters, moves, and terminology.

Production Team

The staff includes:

  • Director: Ibata Shota
  • Series Composition: Watari Wataru
  • Character Design: Matsumoto Mayuko
  • Art Setting: Takahashi Maho
  • Art Director: Scott MacDonald
  • Color Design: Hayashi Yuki
  • Director of Photography: Ito Yasuyuki
  • Editing: Kojima Toshihiko
  • Sound Director: Tateishi Yayoi
  • Music: Hashiguchi Kana
  • Animation Production: Diomedea
  • Recording Cooperation: FAV gaming

Anime Release Date

The Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games anime is scheduled to premiere in 2025.

From Manga to Anime: A History of “Tai Ari Deshita.”

The original manga series by Eri Ejima has been serialized in Media Factory’s Monthly Comic Flapper magazine since January 2020. Eight tankōbon volumes have been released as of October 2024. Seven Seas Entertainment licenses the manga for North American release.

The series has also been adapted into a live-action web drama, which aired on Lemino from May to July 2023. The live-action series was directed by Ryoma Ouchida and written by Anna Kawahara, starring Mizuki Kayashima as Aya Mitsuki and Ririka Tanabe as Mio Yorue.

Themes and Appeal

“Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games” explores themes of friendship, hidden identities, and the passion for gaming. The series blends the elegance of a prestigious academy with the intensity of fighting game culture. The contrast between the characters’ public personas and their private gaming habits creates comedic situations and opportunities for character development.

The series also touches upon the idea of breaking stereotypes and finding common ground through shared interests. Despite their different backgrounds and initial impressions, Aya and Mio form a bond over their love of fighting games.

What to Expect

With the Street Fighter 6 collaboration and the addition of new cast members, the anime adaptation of “Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games” promises to be an exciting and entertaining series. Fans can look forward to seeing the characters and story brought to life with vibrant animation and engaging voice acting. The anime is poised to capture the spirit of the manga while adding its own unique flavor.
