The manga adaptation of Asagi’s light novel series, Long Story Short, I’m Living in the Mountains (Zenryaku, Yamagurashi o Hajimemashita), is drawing to a close. Kadokawa has announced that the fourth compiled book volume of Mifumi Hamada’s manga will be its last, scheduled to ship on May 23, 2025.

Manga Adaptation Ending in May

Mifumi Hamada launched the Long Story Short, I’m Living in the Mountains manga in April 2023 on Kadokawa’s Isekai Comic website. The third volume was published on December 23, 2024. Now, less than six months later, the series is confirmed to be ending with its fourth volume.

Source Material: Asagi’s Light Novels

The manga is based on Asagi’s light novel series of the same name. Asagi originally launched the story on the Kakuyomu website in March 2022, with Kadokawa beginning publication of the light novels, featuring illustrations by Shino, in December 2022. As of March 10, 2025, the light novel series has reached its 10th volume.

J-Novel Club Licenses Light Novels

J-Novel Club has licensed Asagi’s original Long Story Short, I’m Living in the Mountains light novels for English release.

Story Synopsis: Escaping to the Mountains

Long Story Short, I’m Living in the Mountains follows the story of Sano Shohei, a man fed up with his life in the city. After being left by his fiancée and growing weary of dealing with people, Sano decides to make a drastic change: he buys a mountain and becomes a recluse, seeking solace far from modern society.

A Solitary Life?

However, Sano soon discovers that his solitary life is lonelier than he anticipated. In an attempt to remedy this, he buys three colored chicks from a festival stall.

Unexpected Companions

These are no ordinary chicks as they quickly grow, develop reptilian tails, and even begin to talk. Sano’s new life in the mountains becomes increasingly eventful as he learns to live off the land, gets to know his rural neighbors, and raises his unusual, yet endearing, chickens.

Themes and Reception

The light novel has been described as a “relaxing and very strange mountain life begins!”. It explores themes of escapism, finding peace in nature, and discovering unexpected connections in unconventional circumstances. While reviews of the manga adaptation are limited, the light novel has garnered attention for its unique premise and heartwarming narrative.
