The highly anticipated anime film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht: Rising, is slated for a theatrical release in February 2026, marking the first new film in the series in 12 years.
Production and Development
The film, officially titled Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten (or Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgis no Kaiten), is a direct sequel to the 2013 movie Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion. Its production was initially announced in April 2021 as part of the Madoka Magica 10th-anniversary celebration. The original announcement included the reveal of a teaser visual and a 30-second teaser video.
Trailers and Visuals
The first official trailer for Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten was released in September 2023. While details regarding new visual reveals specifically tied to the February 2026 release are expected, the film has already provided audiences with initial glimpses through its earlier teaser and trailer.
Release Date Adjustments
The movie’s release has seen adjustments, with an initial delay from Winter 2024 to Winter 2025. The most recent confirmation, however, places its release in February 2026. This delay was attributed to “production-related circumstances” by the production committee, who expressed apologies to fans eagerly awaiting the film. Despite the postponements, the creative team behind the beloved series, including chief director Akiyuki Shinbo, scriptwriter Gen Urobuchi, original character designer Ume Aoki, and music composer Yuki Kajiura, are returning for Walpurgisnacht: Rising. SHAFT is handling the animation production.
