Mamoru Hosoda’s highly anticipated new anime feature film, “Scarlet” (Hateshinaki Scarlet in Japan), has officially unveiled its first teaser trailer and a new visual. The film is set to open in Japan on November 21, 2025, with U.S. theatrical screenings following on December 12, 2025. This marks Hosoda’s first film in four years, following 2021’s “Belle.”
A Gripping Tale of Revenge and the Land of the Dead
“Scarlet” is described as a dark revenge fantasy, centering on a princess named Scarlet who fails to avenge her father’s murder and subsequently wakes up in the “Land of the Dead.” In this world, described as “full of madness,” Scarlet must successfully take revenge on her nemesis and reach “The Endless Place” or risk being reduced to “Emptiness” and ceasing to exist. The film promises an adventure beyond imagination and a never-ending struggle, posing the question of whether Scarlet can find a way to live at the end of her endless journey.
Director’s Inspiration and Thematic Departure
Director Mamoru Hosoda shared insights into the film’s genesis, stating he conceived the idea around March 2022. He noted a shift in global sentiment from the unity against the coronavirus pandemic in 2021 to the outbreak of wars in 2022, leading him to feel the world had “suddenly changed for the worse.” This realization of the fragility of daily life and peace served as a significant inspiration for the film’s theme, which centers on “revenge.” While Hosoda is known for acclaimed works like “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” and “Summer Wars,” “Scarlet” aims to be a departure from his previous styles, offering a gripping yet dark narrative.
Visuals and Animation Style
The teaser trailer showcases the film’s “gorgeous 3D animation,” which Hosoda previously stated would move beyond traditional 2D animation or “Hollywood-style CG.” This unique visual approach is expected to be a highlight, with early viewers noting it appears even more stunning than his work in “Belle.”
Cast and Production Details
The film stars Mana Ashida as the titular princess Scarlet and Masaki Okada as Hijiri, a nurse from modern Japan. Other key cast members include Yutaka Matsushige as Cornelius, Kōtarō Yoshida as Voltemand, Kōji Yakusho as Claudius (whose conspiracy leads Scarlet on her quest), Masachika Ichimura as Amulet (Scarlet’s father), and Yuki Saitō as Gertrude (Scarlet’s mother). The film is produced by Studio Chizu.
International Premieres
“Scarlet” is set to have its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, which will take place from August 27 to September 6 in Venice Lido, Italy. The film will also have its North American premiere as a Special Presentation at the 50th annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
