Director Mamoru Hosoda’s upcoming anime film, titled Scarlet (Japanese title: Hateshinaki Scarlet, or “Scarlet Without Limits”), has officially announced its main voice cast. The film, produced by Studio Chizu, will feature Mana Ashida as the titular character, Scarlet, and Masaki Okada as Hijiri.
Mana Ashida will portray Scarlet, a strong princess who embarks on a journey of vengeance after her father’s murder, with her role encompassing both child and 19-year-old versions of the character. Masaki Okada will voice Hijiri, a modern-day nurse who finds himself transported to the “Land of the Dead” and becomes Scarlet’s companion. This marks the first time both Ashida and Okada have participated in a Hosoda production.
The film is set to open in Japan on November 21, and in U.S. theaters on December 12. Hosoda is credited with directing, writing the screenplay, and the original work for Scarlet. He has also indicated that the film will present a new visual style, distinct from traditional 2D animation or “Hollywood-style CG,” aiming for a completely fresh look. The narrative centers on Scarlet’s boundless quest for vengeance in a world where those who fail to enact revenge risk becoming “nothing” and disappearing.
