Two prominent manga artists, est em and Sayaka Mogi, are both launching new manga series. est em is set to draw a manga adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed novel, The Remains of the Day. Meanwhile, Sayaka Mogi is launching a new “dark fairy tale fantasy” manga titled Kuroneko Sensei to Hotsureta Kanja-tachi (The Black Cat Doctor and the Frayed Patients), set in a hospital.
est em Adapts Booker Prize-Winning Novel
Manga creator est em, known for their distinctive art style, is taking on a significant literary work by adapting Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day into a manga. The novel, which won the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1989, was also adapted into a highly-regarded 1993 film starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, earning eight Academy Award nominations.
est em’s previous works include Ō-sama no Mimi: Himitsu no Bar e Yōkoso (King’s Ear), which launched in Shogakukan’s Josei Seven magazine in May 2021 and is ongoing, with its fifth compiled book volume published in September 2024.
Sayaka Mogi Explores Dark Fantasy in New Hospital Series
Sayaka Mogi, recognized for her unique approach to horror and fantasy, is set to delve into a new genre with Kuroneko Sensei to Hotsureta Kanja-tachi (The Black Cat Doctor and the Frayed Patients). This new series is described as a “dark fairy tale fantasy” and will take place within a hospital setting.
Mogi has been quite active recently, having launched Happy Hypoxia -Haiiro no Ko- (Happy Hypoxia -The Grey Child-) on Futabasha’s Web Action manga website on June 10. Her “interspecies coming-of-age sci-fi” manga, Girl, Meat Girl, recently concluded on February 13, after launching in Asahi Shimbun Publications’ Nemuki+ magazine in February 2023.
Mogi is also known for her horror manga Pupa, which was serialized from 2011 to 2013 and inspired a 12-episode anime series in 2014. Additionally, her Red Riding Hood’s Wolf Apprentice manga, which launched in September 2017, saw its sequel, Red Riding Hood’s Wolf Apprentice: Final Testament to the Moon, debut at Comitia in May 2019. Glacier Bay Books licensed and published the first volume of the latter in English in print in May 2022.
