The highly anticipated CG anime short, Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express, a sequel to animator Yōhei Kameyama’s viral 2022 short Milky☆Highway, has released its second trailer, unveiling additional cast members, the theme song, and confirming its premiere date of July 3, 2025. The anime will air on Tokyo MX in Japan and stream simultaneously on YouTube, with dubbed versions available in ten languages, including English, Spanish, and French.
Expanded Voice Cast to Guide the Galactic Journey
The latest trailer introduces a host of new voice talents joining the cosmic adventure. The previously announced main duo, Momoka Terasawa as the super-human Chiharu and Anna Nagase as her cyborg best friend Makina, will be joined by a diverse ensemble.
The newly revealed cast members and their roles are:
- Hisako Kanemoto as Akane
- Mikako Komatsu as Ryōko
- Kōki Uchiyama as Kurt
- Makoto Koichi as Kanata
- Yoshitaka Yamaya as Max
These new characters, including the super-human pair Akane and Kanata, and the cyborg pals Kurt and Max, will join Chiharu and Makina on their unexpected journey.
Classic Tune Sets the Tone: “Gingakei Made Tonde Ike!”
The second trailer also provided the first listen of the anime’s theme song, “Gingakei Made Tonde Ike!” (Fly to the Galaxy!). This track is a 1977 song by the popular Japanese girl group Candies, adding a retro touch to the futuristic setting. The song’s inclusion reflects director Yōhei Kameyama’s unique artistic vision, blending nostalgic elements with cutting-edge CG animation.
Story: Community Service Gone Galactic
Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express continues the story from Milky☆Highway, where Chiharu and Makina were arrested for violating space traffic laws. As their community service, the duo, along with the newly introduced characters, are tasked with cleaning the interplanetary train known as the “Milky☆Subway.” However, what begins as a simple job quickly spirals into chaos when the train unexpectedly takes off into deep space, propelling the misfits into a “never-before-seen space-train spectacle.”
Director Yōhei Kameyama is once again taking on multiple roles for the sequel, including writing, directing, producing, character design, modeling, animation, and editing. Kameyama’s original Milky☆Highway short garnered over 6.75 million views on YouTube, attracting a global audience. The sequel promises an expanded narrative with significantly more characters and a longer runtime, a testament to Kameyama’s ambitious one-man production approach.
Fans can look forward to the premiere of Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express on July 3, 2025.
