Tokyo, Japan – The eagerly anticipated CG anime short, Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express, is set to debut on July 3, featuring a newly revealed cast and a nostalgic theme song. This sequel to Yohei Kameyama’s viral 2022 short, Milky☆Highway, promises another dose of fast-paced, unprincipled space adventure.
A Return to the Cosmic Commute
Originally a 3D animated graduation project by Yohei Kameyama, Milky☆Highway gained significant traction on YouTube, amassing over 6.7 million views globally due to its quirky world-building and laid-back dialogue. Now, Kameyama returns to helm the sequel, Milky☆Subway, taking on multiple roles including director, writer, character designer, modeler, animator, and editor, a testament to his singular vision and talent. The new short will premiere on TOKYO MX and YouTube, with global availability including dubs in ten languages, such as English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Thai, Russian, and Chinese, aiming for a broad international audience.
Expanded Ensemble and Plot Details
The story of Milky☆Subway follows super human Chiharu and cyborg Makina, who find themselves arrested for violating space traffic laws. As a form of community service, they are tasked with cleaning the “Milky☆Subway,” an old interplanetary train. However, what begins as a simple job quickly spirals into chaos when the train unexpectedly takes off into deep space, throwing the crew into an unpredictable and wild journey. The official website describes the adventure as a “never-before-seen space-train spectacle, powered by nothing but pure momentum!”
The sequel introduces a completely new voice cast, bringing fresh voices to the returning characters and new additions. Anna Nagase, known for her role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad ISEKAI, lends her voice to Makina, while Momoko Terasawa, who played Chika Komari in Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!, voices Chiharu.
Further expanding the ensemble are:
- Hisako Kanemoto as Akane (Zenith Greyrat in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation).
- Mikako Komatsu as Ryoko (Fels in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon?).
- Koki Uchiyama as Kurt (Rin Itoshi in BLUE LOCK).
- Makoto Koichi as Kanata (Lloyd in I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince).
- Yoshitaka Yamaya as Max (Itsuki Kawasumi in The Rising of the Shield Hero).
A Blast from the Past: The Theme Song
Adding a unique touch to the cosmic journey is the short’s theme song, “Gingakei Made Tonde Ike!” (Fly to the Galaxy!). This 1977 track by the Japanese girl group Candies infuses the modern CG animation with a classic, upbeat vibe, contributing to the short’s distinct charm.
