The highly anticipated theatrical release of Yōhei Kameyama’s anime project, a re-edited version of Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express, has officially unveiled its full title as Ginga Tokkyū Milky☆Subway Kakueki Teisha Gekijō Iki (Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express: Local Train to the Theater). Alongside the title reveal, a new teaser trailer confirmed the film’s premiere date in Japan for February 6, 2026.
Theatrical Debut Details
The upcoming film is a cinematic rendition of the 12-episode Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express CG anime series, which initially premiered on July 3, 2025, on Tokyo MX and simultaneously streamed on YouTube in multiple languages. This theatrical cut will feature re-edited content from the series along with entirely new material, promising an expanded and fresh experience for audiences.
The announcement was made via the official X (formerly Twitter) account for the anime, building excitement for fans of Kameyama’s unique blend of sci-fi and quirky humor.
Returning Cast and Creative Vision
Yōhei Kameyama, the visionary behind the project, is once again at the helm, directing, writing, and producing the film. Kameyama’s extensive involvement extends to character designs, modeling, animation, and editing, showcasing his singular creative control over the universe he has built.
Reprising their roles from the anime series, Momoko Terasawa returns as the super human Chiharu, and Anna Nagase as the cyborg Makina. Other additional cast members from the original anime are also set to reprise their roles in the film. Bit Grooove Promotion is credited with the film’s sound production.
The Galactic Limited Express Narrative
The Milky☆Subway saga follows the misadventures of Chiharu and Makina, who find themselves arrested for violating space traffic laws. As a consequence, they are sentenced to community service aboard the “Milky☆Subway,” an interplanetary train. What begins as a seemingly straightforward task quickly devolves into chaos when the train unexpectedly hurtles into deep space. The official English website describes the premise as the crew scrambling in confusion as chaos unfolds onboard, with “No purpose! No principle! No point!”.
The Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express series itself is a sequel to Kameyama’s 2022 CG anime short, Milky☆Highway, which gained significant traction on YouTube with millions of views. The theme song for the anime series is “Gingakei Made Tonde Ike!” (Fly to the Galaxy!), a 1977 song by the girl group Candies.
