The highly anticipated anime film, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved, has revealed its non-credit opening sequence, expanded its voice cast, and debuted a striking new visual ahead of its Japanese theatrical premiere on June 27, 2025. The film, officially titled Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon: Samishigariya no Ryū in Japan, marks a significant return for the beloved franchise to the big screen.
Kyoto Animation is producing the film, with Tatsuya Ishihara directing and Yuka Yamada handling the script. Miku Kadowaki is credited for character design and serves as chief animation director. The movie is set to run for 105 minutes, continuing directly from the events of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S, the anime’s second season.
Non-Credit Opening and Theme Songs
The official website for the film unveiled the non-credit opening, featuring the theme song “Namida no Parade” (Parade of Tears) performed by the band fhána. Additionally, the film’s ending theme is “Bokutachi no Hibi” (Days of Us), performed by singer Sachiko Kobayashi, who also joins the cast.
Expanded Voice Cast Details
The film introduces several new voice actors to the established ensemble. Fumihiko Tachiki takes on the role of Kimun Kamui, while Nobunaga Shimazaki voices Azad. Notably, Shiori Sugiura steps in to voice Ilulu, replacing Tomomi Mineuchi. Veteran singer Sachiko Kobayashi joins the cast as Felicitas, a dragon affiliated with Kimun Kamui’s army. Other new additions include Shinya Takahashi and Azusa Tadokoro, who are voicing fairies in the film.
The core cast members are reprising their roles, ensuring continuity for fans. This includes Mutsumi Tamura as Kobayashi, Yūki Kuwahara as Tohru, and Maria Naganawa as Kanna. Also returning are Yūki Takada as Elma, Minami Takahashi as Lucoa, Daisuke Ono as Fafnir, Yūichi Nakamura as Makoto Takiya, Emiri Katō as Riko Saikawa, and Kaori Ishihara as Shōta Magatsuchi.
New Collaborative Visual
To commemorate the film’s release, a special collaboration visual has been released. This unique artwork features a joint effort between the original manga author, Coolkyoushinja, and the anime’s character designer, Miku Kadowaki. The visual showcases Kanna, Kobayashi, Tohru, and Ilulu drawn by Coolkyoushinja, alongside Kimun Kamui and Azad illustrated by Kadowaki, creating a powerful and contrasting image that hints at the brewing conflict in the story.
International Release and Series Background
Crunchyroll has secured the worldwide theatrical rights for the film, excluding Asia, and plans to screen it in North America with Japanese audio and English subtitles. This will allow international fans to experience the new cinematic chapter.
The Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid franchise originated as a manga series by Coolkyoushinja, which began serialization in Monthly Action magazine in May 2013 before moving to Manga Action in February 2024. Kyoto Animation first adapted the manga into an anime series in January 2017, followed by a second season in July 2021. Both seasons are available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
