Bandai Namco Filmworks announced at San Diego Comic-Con International that Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans – Urðr Hunt, a standalone anime spinoff from the Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans television series, will premiere in Japanese theaters in October. A North American release is also planned. The full title for the standalone anime has been revealed as Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans – Urðr Hunt Special Edition: Path of the Little Challenger.
From Mobile Game to Theatrical Feature
Urðr Hunt originated as a side story within the Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans G smartphone game. The game, which combined anime and game elements, launched in November 2022 and concluded its service in January 2024. The last part of the game’s 12th episode debuted within the app in October 2023. The decision to release Urðr Hunt as a standalone anime comes after the mobile game’s discontinuation.
Plot and Setting of Urðr Hunt
The Urðr Hunt story is set in the year P.D. 323, chronologically positioned between the first and second seasons of the original Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans TV series. The narrative follows Wistario Afam, a young man from the Radonitsa Colony near Venus. Venus, having lost to Mars in colonial development, is depicted as a remote planet largely ignored by the four major economic blocs and used primarily as a penal colony, where inhabitants lack even IDs.
Wistario, driven by a desire to change the stagnant conditions of his homeland, encounters a mysterious girl who claims to be a guide to the “Urðr-Hunt.” The plot revolves around Wistario’s participation in the “Urðr Hunt,” described as a prize race with substantial monetary rewards. Through his encounters and conflicts with other participants, Wistario gradually uncovers the mystery behind the race. The series also features the Gundam Hajiroboshi, an old mobile suit that comes into Wistario’s possession.
Production Team and Original Series
The Urðr Hunt anime has seen the involvement of key staff from the original Iron-Blooded Orphans series. Tatsuyuki Nagai is credited as the director, and Hajime Kamoshida, who was a series composer for Urðr Hunt‘s game animation, is involved in the script. Other returning staff include original character designer Yuu Itou, character designer Michinori Chiba, music composer Masaru Yokoyama, and mechanical designers Naohiro Washio, Kanetake Ebikawa, Ippei Gyoubu, and Kenji Teraoka. Sunrise BEYOND, which is merging with BANDAI NAMCO Film Works, produced the animations for the game’s animated scenes.
The original Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans anime series premiered in 2015 and concluded in 2017 after two seasons. It garnered a devoted fanbase for its story of child security agents rebelling against oppressive forces on a terraformed Mars.
