The Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt manga by Yasuo Ohtagaki is taking a break. According to reports, the manga will be on hiatus until June 13, 2025. This announcement was made in March 2025.
Publication Details
Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt has been serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior magazine since March 23, 2012. As of February 2025, the series has been compiled into 25 tankōbon volumes.
Ohtagaki’s Health and Drawing Style
Ohtagaki previously took a break from September to December 2018 due to tenosynovitis, which is inflammation around the tendons. Following his return, he mentioned that he would need to change his drawing style to avoid worsening the condition of his left hand.
“Final Stage” and Future Plans
In February 2022, Ohtagaki stated that the manga had entered its “final stage.” However, in October 2022, he revealed that he planned to continue the manga for another five to six years. In March 2025, it was announced the manga would enter a hiatus until June 13, 2025.
Story Setting
Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt is set in the Universal Century timeline, during the same One Year War as the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime. The story revolves around the battles between Io Fleming of the Earth Federation and Daryl Lorenz of the Principality of Zeon in the “Thunderbolt Sector,” a dangerous shoal zone filled with wreckage.
