Moyoco Anno’s popular shojo manga, Sugar Sugar Rune, is set to receive new anime projects, as announced by Studio Khara during Japan Expo 2025. The announcement includes both a new animated short film and a separate, full-fledged anime adaptation of the manga.
A 20th Anniversary Celebration with a Prequel Short Film
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sugar Sugar Rune manga, Studio Khara has produced an original animated short film titled “SUGAR SUGAR RUNE Les deux sorcières”. This 3DCG short, directed by Yusuke Matsui, serves as a prequel to the original story, exploring Chocolat and Vanilla’s departure from the magical world, an aspect not detailed in the manga. The short film was created under the close supervision of Moyoco Anno herself.
Full Anime Adaptation Confirmed
In addition to the celebratory short, Studio Khara also confirmed that a new, complete anime adaptation of the Sugar Sugar Rune manga is officially in production. While details on the format and release date of this full adaptation are yet to be fully disclosed, it is expected to utilize similar CG animation to the prequel short. The news was met with enthusiasm at Japan Expo in Paris.
