A special trailer for the upcoming anime series My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s has been released to celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day, featuring the magical beast character, Yoru, who typically appears in the form of a black cat. The anime, produced by TMS Entertainment and animated by Sunrise, is set to premiere in October 2025.
Celebrating Black Cat Appreciation Day with Yoru
The new trailer specifically highlights Yoru, a magical beast character voiced by Sanae Kobayashi, who is often seen in her black cat form. This release coincides with Black Cat Appreciation Day, an annual observance held on August 17th. The day was established by Wayne H. Morris to honor his late sister June and her black cat, Sinbad, and aims to dispel common myths and superstitions surrounding black cats, encouraging their adoption. Black cats often face longer wait times in shelters compared to other felines due to these outdated beliefs. In many cultures, however, black cats are considered symbols of good luck and prosperity.
The Significance of Black Cats in Pop Culture and Folklore
Beyond the anime’s trailer, black cats hold a notable place in various forms of media and folklore. Popular examples include Salem from “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” and Thackery Binx from “Hocus Pocus.” Historically, while some European folklore associated them with witchcraft and bad luck, ancient Egypt revered all cats as sacred, including black cats. In countries like Japan, black cats are even considered good luck, tied to the Maneki-neko.
About My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s
The anime adapts the light novel series by Matsuri Akai, which began as a web novel in January 2017. The story follows Akira Oda, a high school student summoned to another world with his classmates. While others receive “cheat” abilities, Akira is assigned the “Assassin” role, but his stats quickly surpass even the “Hero” class. Becoming suspicious of the summoning king, Akira is framed and forced to flee, embarking on a journey to return to his original world.
