Taipei, Taiwan – Nada Holdings Corp. has officially confirmed the development of both a brand-new Lollipop Chainsaw video game and an accompanying anime adaptation, expanding the cult-favorite zombie action franchise into new media. The announcement, made in partnership with Tokyo-based Dragami Games Co., Ltd., signals a significant revival for the series, which recently saw a successful remastered release.
The original Lollipop Chainsaw, known for its over-the-top zombie combat, dark humor, and graphic content, debuted in 2012 as a collaboration between game designer Suda51 and film director James Gunn. Its remastered edition, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, launched in 2024, achieving over 1.5 million cumulative sales worldwide and demonstrating the franchise’s enduring appeal.
A New Game Staying True to its Roots
Development for the new Lollipop Chainsaw game is already underway, with Nada Holdings and Dragami Games emphasizing their commitment to preserving and building upon the original’s distinct appeal. The development team includes key staff members from the original title, ensuring the new entry remains faithful to the established tone and world.
A press release highlighted that the new game aims to “recreate a world rich in dark humor” and will prioritize staying true to the distinctive tone and spirit of the original work, “without imposing excessive creative restrictions in the name of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion).” This statement has garnered attention and discussion among the fanbase.
While no release window or platform details for the new game have been revealed yet, official X (formerly Twitter) accounts in both English and Japanese have been launched to provide development updates.
The Rebirth of a Cult Classic
Lollipop Chainsaw originally gained a cult following despite mixed critical reviews for its gameplay and storyline. The RePOP remaster, which launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC in September 2024 (with PS4 and Xbox One versions in December 2024), focused on quality-of-life improvements and additional gameplay content while leaving the original story unchanged. The remaster notably allowed players worldwide to enjoy the Japanese voice lines, previously locked to the Japanese version.
Expanding the Universe with an Anime Adaptation
Alongside the new game, an anime adaptation is also in development, further extending the Lollipop Chainsaw universe into new media. While the announcement confirms the anime project, details regarding production studios, release windows, or specific staff members have not yet been disclosed. This expansion marks a new chapter for the series, aiming to honor its legacy while delivering fresh experiences for fans across different entertainment formats.
