Turkey! Time to Strike, the unique anime blending competitive high school bowling with historical time travel, took a remarkably dark and introspective turn in its ninth episode, titled “Natsu no Sumika” (Summer’s Dwelling), which premiered with an ending theme of the same name performed by Nagi Yanagi. This pivotal episode delved into profound themes of despair, the value of life, and the enduring power of human connection, pushing the series beyond its initial lighthearted premise.

The High Stakes of Existence: Suicide Attempts and a Fateful Game

Episode 9 stands out as arguably the darkest installment of Turkey! Time to Strike yet, featuring multiple characters grappling with the brink of suicide. This intense narrative choice centered around a bowling game that, on the surface, appeared to be a deadly contest to determine who would die. However, beneath this grim facade, the game served as a powerful catalyst for the characters to confront their despair and ultimately rediscover the preciousness of life.

A significant plot point involved Suguri, a character from the Sengoku period, attempting seppuku (honorable suicide) due to her inability to keep a family secret. The modern-day bowling club members intervened, preventing this tragic act. This moment underscored the profound cultural clash and the heavy burdens carried by the characters in their anachronistic setting.

Character Development Through Crisis: Rina and Akebi’s Connection

The episode also highlighted the strong character writing that has been a hallmark of the series, particularly through the interactions between Rina and Akebi. Rina, drawing upon her own past experiences and personal growth, effectively conveyed to Akebi how much she was cared for by others. This act of emotional support was crucial in guiding Akebi through her own struggles, demonstrating the bonds that have formed between the time-displaced bowlers and the people of the Sengoku era.

Mai Otonashi, the captain of the Ikkokukan High School Bowling Club, played a crucial role in transforming the episode’s somber tone. Despite the heavy themes, Mai managed to steer the narrative towards a resolution where everyone found enjoyment and smiles through their shared activity. This ability to find light amidst darkness reinforces the core message of the series: even when faced with overwhelming challenges, connection and a shared passion can bring hope.

The Lingering Question: Returning Home and Resolving the Past

As Turkey! Time to Strike approaches its conclusion with only a few episodes remaining, Episode 9 intensified the urgency of several unresolved plotlines. The girls from the future must not only find a way to return to their own time but also assist the Tokura family in the past with their village’s protection and securing their freedom. The appearance of lightning in the episode further hints at potential shifts in the timeline or conditions necessary for their return, suggesting that the journey back might be more complicated than anticipated.

Despite the dramatic shift in tone and the inclusion of serious themes, the series has consistently maintained its identity as a bowling anime. Even amidst the time travel and life-or-death scenarios, the essence of bowling remains central, with characters continuously engaging with the sport and applying its lessons to their extraordinary circumstances.

Musical Accompaniment: “Natsu no Sumika”

The episode’s emotional weight was further amplified by its unique musical accompaniment. For Episode 9, the opening theme was notably performed by the Sengoku sisters. Additionally, the episode featured the insert song “Natsu no Sumika” by Nagi Yanagi, which served as the ending theme, perfectly encapsulating the poignant and reflective mood of this installment. This particular song choice underscored the episode’s exploration of profound moments within the transient “summer’s dwelling” in the past.

Episode 9 of Turkey! Time to Strike delivered a powerful narrative that explored the depths of human despair and the resilience of the spirit. By blending its unique premise with heavy thematic elements, the series has continued to surprise and engage its audience, setting the stage for a compelling conclusion to the time-traveling bowling adventure.
