Netflix has officially released a teaser for the newly announced anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, confirming a new standalone story set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. The highly anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed first season is currently in production, with Studio Trigger returning to animate the series in collaboration with CD Projekt Red.
A New Narrative in Night City
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is described as a “standalone 10-episode story” that will delve into “a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge” within the treacherous Night City. While the first season focused on the tragic tale of David Martinez, CD Projekt Red has explicitly stated that David’s story is concluded, with the new series exploring fresh narratives and characters in the vibrant, violent metropolis. This approach allows the anime to continue expanding on the rich lore of the Cyberpunk 2077 universe without directly continuing the previous protagonist’s journey.
The creative team behind the original series largely reunites for this new installment. Kai Ikarashi, who served as a storyboard artist and animation director on the first season, is making his directorial debut with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. Bartosz Sztybor, a producer and writer from the initial series, is again involved as showrunner, story writer, and producer. Character design will be handled by Ichigo Kanno, who also contributed to the first series, and Masahiko Otsuka is returning as the scriptwriter.
Production and Release
The announcement of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 was made during Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles, where CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger unveiled the anime’s official logo and poster art. Voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez) from the original series were present at the Anime Expo panel, along with writer/producer Bartosz Sztybor. Although a specific release date has not yet been confirmed, the series is slated for future release on Netflix. A closed-door teaser screening was held following the announcement, hinting at the visual style and atmosphere of the upcoming series.
The first season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which debuted in September 2022, garnered significant acclaim from both fans and critics, even spurring renewed interest in the Cyberpunk 2077 video game.
