Bandai Namco Filmworks announced details of Sunrise’s new Macross animation project, initially revealed in June 2023, which includes a songstress audition. Flying Dog and Lantis are hosting the “Macross x Sunrise ‘New Macross’ Super Dimension Songstress Audition 2025” or “Macross Heroine Audition” to discover the new singing talent for the upcoming anime.
Macross x Sunrise Announce Super Dimension Songstress Audition 2025
The audition aims to find the next generation of songstresses for the Macross franchise. The audition is open to women between 13 and 22 years old (as of April 1, 2025) who reside in Japan, with entries accepted between March 2 and April 30. Underage applicants require guardian permission. The final in-person judging will occur in Tokyo in late July, preceded by online judging in late June.

“Ai to Ai” – The Audition Theme Song
The livestream event showcased the audition’s main song, “Ai to Ai” (written as “I to I” in the web link), composed and arranged by musician Fuwari. The contest’s YouTube channel will stream weekly performances of “I to I” by past Macross songstresses and special guests, including Minori Suzuki, the voice of Freyja Wion from Macross Delta.
Macross’ Legacy of Music and Mecha
The Macross series, which began in 1982 with Super Dimension Fortress Macross, is known for its blend of music, transforming Valkyrie fighter jets, and romantic storylines. Its music has gained recognition beyond the anime genre. Previous Macross projects, Macross Frontier and Macross Delta, held similar auditions, discovering talents like Megumi Nakajima and Minori Suzuki.
New Era for the Macross Franchise
After overcoming distribution challenges, the Macross franchise is expanding globally. In 2021, Big West, Studio Nue, and Harmony Gold USA reached an agreement for international expansion. In 2024, all 18 Macross titles became available on Disney+, though some are region-locked. Hulu is also set to stream multiple Macross anime in the US. With a new anime on the horizon and increased accessibility, Macross is entering a new era.
